L.A. Weekender: Halloween edition

pumpkinphoto 199x300 L.A. Weekender: Halloween edition The weekend starts a little early for some of you this week, and we are fully supportive of that. Halloween only comes around once a year after all!

One of the things we love about living in Los Angeles is the excellent variety of things to do on a nightly basis–and those options double when it’s a holiday. So, without further a due, your Halloween L.A. Weekender:

Theme park horrors: If you haven’t had a chance yet, Knott’s Scary Farm, Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights and Mickey’s Halloween Party are still going strong this weekend. The final days are sometimes the most fun because the monsters are soaking in their last glorifying scary moments via your timid selves.

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride: Griffith Park: home to murder, torture, paranormal activity, abduction and legends. The area surrounding the “Old Zoo” and “B Rock” come back to life on this haunted hayride through one of the scariest areas of Los Angeles.
There is a reason why the theme this year is “Based On Actual Events.

The Purge: Fear The Night: New to L.A. this year, The Purge event invites guests to venture into the film itself. Six floors of horrors awaits you. In a world where “crime is legal for one day of the year,” it’s immersive horror theater at it’s finest. Guests must be 18 and older to enter.

Danny Elfman: If you’re a Tim Burton fan you’ll love this one. Head down to the Nokia Theater for an evening of listening to Danny Elfman’s masterpieces including the soundtrack from The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice and Edward Scissor-hands. Tonight is your last chance to see him.

Nightmare Before Christmas at the El Capitan: Keeping to the theme of Danny Elfman/Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas is showing at the El Capitan Theater. The film includes new 4D sensory effects and digital Disney 3-D to make the experience come to life like it never has before. A “making of” exhibit also adds to the fun. Tickets can be purchased online or at the box office upon arrival.

Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare: This weekend is your last chance to be weirded out by Rob Zombie’s creative imagination. Mazes, concerts, the Bloody Boulevard and more await you if you choose this option for your Halloween fun. The event runs all weekend long with a new music lineup each night. www.greatamericannightmare.com

Whether you plan to get the pants scared off of you, spend some time basking in the talents of Danny Elfman and Tim Burton or just staying in with candy and a Hallween classic, we hope you have a fun and safe Halloween.

Halloween at the Fairplex office!

halloween1 Halloween at the Fairplex office! Happy Halloween from all of us at Fairplex!

Halloween is the perfect opportunity to go all out at the office. We’re still somewhat in the spirit of Fair and Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare rallies for it’s final run starting tonight, so of course we are all about this holiday cheap inflatable water slides for sale.

Upon entering the office I was greeted by cheers and laughter. When I entered the hallway it wasn’t hard to see why! A brightly colored group of Fairplex employees decided to dress up to the fullest: nerds, Disney characters, goblins and Pink Ladies…

The Fairey Blogster proved she can write and bake when she brought Witch Cupcakes.

reneescupcakes 0011 300x225 Halloween at the Fairplex office! She made these little creative cuties using basic items like frosting, cookies and Hershey’s Kisses.

You don’t even need fancy baking equipment for these. She made the little ribbons on the “hat” by filling a sandwich bag with frosting and cutting a little hole in the corner to make them.

Even if you don’t have the biggest sweet tooth, it’s hard to resist taking one for yourself. It’s Pinterest-worthy, I think icon wink Halloween at the Fairplex office! We’ll be posting a special Halloween L.A. Weekender later today too, in case you don’t have plans for tonight. Happy Halloween! Have fun and be safe tonight!

INFOGRAPHIC: The rundown on Oktoberfest at Fairplex

Oktoberfest has come and gone, but it was one heck of a celebration cheap water slides for sale!

Bubble mania, beer and bikes

Fairplex spent the last weekend of October in style with bubbles, beer, bikes and mazes. One of the best parts of the Fairplex campus is that we are so spread out. You can have multiple events running at the same time, which is exactly what went down this weekend.

Saturday morning was an overflow of bubbly foam and enthusiastic participants of the Bubble Run 5k. Decked out in white t-shirts, tutus, masks and a mish-mash of crazy gear, guests of all ages ran, danced and skipped through the course, ending it all with a huge dance party (covered in bubbles, of course.)

On our race track, LA Bikefest fans were getting their scare on at Spooky Kross. Cyclists rode their bikes through a dirt terrain marked by graves, cobwebs and skulls. The real fun was watching the cyclists themselves, dressed up for Halloween in all kinds of ridiculously fun attire. Have you ever seen Mario or Alvin the Chipmunk bike across bridges and through mini-canyons? No? We hadn’t either until this weekend.

We also celebrated at Oktoberfest final days of 2013. On Saturday we had more than 3,000 people join us for drinks, food and dancing in our Festplatz and Festhalle. Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare was also in full swing, especially with fun bands like Reel Big Fish and Goldfinger taking over for Ska Night. It’s always an adventure at Fairplex!

There are only a few days left until Halloween! We hope you’ve chosen your costumes and are as excited as we are about the influx of candy and parties that are coming our way. This weekend and next will be fully loaded with Halloween-themed events and we’ve circled up some of the best ones for this L.A. Weekender.

Oktoberfest Final Weekend: We couldn’t let a weekender slip by without a shout-out to Oktoberfest! It’s our last weekend of the year for lagers and ales, tons of toasts, warm, tasty German-themed food and contests and games aplenty. We’re sad to see it come to an end (giant beer steins and rock music are kind of a favorite of ours) but we enjoyed it to the fullest! Come party with us one last time, Thursday-Sunday. www.oktoberfestatfairplex.com

Bubble Run 5k: Colorful foam + 5k race = endorphin-laden fun. The Bubble Run is coming to Fairplex this Saturday as our grounds are transformed into brightly colored foam zones, perfect for the whole family. Participants run the three-mile trek through our grounds and get foamed-out at four different foam bogs. At the end, runners and spectators alike celebrate at a huge dance party. Not a bad start to a Saturday… www.bubblerun.com

Boo at the Los Angeles Zoo: Taking the Halloween spirit out to North Hollywood, the Los Angeles Zoo is having its own celebration.Visitors are invited to wear their wildest costumes and enjoy a trick-or-treat trek through the Zoo. Kids can watch pumpkin carving demonstrations, do arts & crafts and encounter some of the zoo’s creepiest animals. http://www.lazoo.org/

Cirque de Soleil: Totem: If you need a break from all the Halloween hullabaloo, check out one of the newest Cirque de Soleil shows: Totem. Charting the evolution of man from its original amphibian to its ultimate desire to fly, the show boasts a variety of ancient myths displayed through acrobatics and other forms of artistic expression. You can see it this weekend at Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro.

Whatever you decide to do this weekend, have fun and be safe!

Neighborhood Halloween Party at Fairplex

halloweenparty 013 225x300 Neighborhood Halloween Party at Fairplex Community is a vital part of Fairplex. We love meeting our neighbors and spending time with them throughout the year.

One of the ways we do this is through our family events. Yesterday was our annual neighborhood Halloween party.

Kids arrived in full costume and took turns getting their faces painted, playing games, making fun crafts, eating candy and getting their energy out in the bounce houses.

Our community team and Fairplex volunteers did a great job of decorating and providing cheery Halloween fun for the neighborhood. More than 200 families came to celebrate and spend time with us. All in all, it was a pretty great evening!

FOOD ALERT: Butterbeer Frappuccinos come to Starbucks

If you grew up reading the Harry Potter series you will appreciate this week’s piece of food news: Butterbeer exists outside of Harry Potter World.

For those of you who aren’t HP fans, butterbeer is a fictionalized favorite beverage of Harry and his friends throughout the series.

When Harry Potter World opened at Universal Studios Orlando, the drink was brought to reality at the Hogsmeade.

Think caramel root beer floats, but oh so much better. While we can’t swing by the Hogsmeade whenever we would like, Starbucks doesn’t leave us hanging. HackTheMenu revealed this delicious item on their secret menu. Forget pumpkin spice lattes… the Butterbeer Frappuccino is here.

The Butterbeer Frappuccino is a Toffee Nut & Caramel Creme Frappuccino with an extra two to three pumps of caramel and toffee nut syrup thrown in. All you need to do is ask for the Butterbeer Frappuccino and your barista will hook it up.

It sounds like its a sugar-loaded drink… which is exactly what you need for this Halloween season. We’re going to have to try this one out!
