Thanksgiving Decorating Ideas

If you’ve driven anywhere in the last few days you’d know Christmas carols are being played non-stop on the radio. I love this type of music, but I wish they would hold off a bit since we still have to go through Thanksgiving.

So, before any of you start busting out your Christmas trees and other decorations, remember that the last Thursday in November is a day to enjoy with family and give thanks for all of the good in our lives.

Whether you are driving to someone’s home, hosting people or coming to our Thanksgiving dinner at McKinley’s Grille, here are three things you can do to make this Thanksgiving the best one E V E R!

1. Thanksgiving Message Board: As family or guests arrive for Thanksgiving, have them write what they are thankful for on a paper leaf and pin it up. Once everyone is finished having dinner, pass the paper leaves and read the messages. It’s great for bonding.

2. Family Tree: Holidays are the perfect time to teach our young family members about their heritage. Have your loved ones bring baby photos and arrange them on the wall in a “family tree.” The fun starts when people start guessing who’s who.

3. Cornucopia: Much like the turkey, cornucopias are a staple at the Thanksgiving table. Although I usually just include pumpkins and gourds in mine, many people like to add dozens of different fruits, vegetables, candy and nuts in theirs. At the end of the day, always go with whatever you think looks the best. icon smile Thanksgiving Decorating Ideas

‘Tis The Season To Volunteer

I’ve always believed volunteering is a great way to impact the community and teach our young ones the importance of getting involved in something dear to our hearts.

So, if you are looking for family volunteer opportunities this holiday season, see below for more information about how you and your family can get involved in our Farm at Fairplex this #NationalFamilyVolunteerDay

I don’t know about you, but I am so looking forward to getting dirty, becoming one with nature, and learning more about California agriculture this Saturday.

Fairplex Snapshot: The Farm

If you visited The Farm during your visit to the LA County Fair, you know how beautiful and peaceful this area of our grounds really is.

But, did you know our Farm is one of the largest urban farms in Los Angeles? Yep. Our five-acre Farm is host to dozens of specialty crops such as fruits, vegetables and herbs.

In honor of our new Farm Field Trips Program, today’s snapshot is a glimpse of our Farm:

In case you’re wondering…

This new program is actually an extension of the FairKids Field Trips Program that brings 150,000+ students to explore agriculture, animal husbandry and STEM topics during the annual LA County Fair.

The goal of this program is to teach students about the foods they eat, their nutritional value, where they come from, how they are grown/raised, the role Mother Nature plays on our food supply, sustainable agriculture, effective use of energy and water supplies and much more.

Convention for “Makers” Comes to Fairplex

Dozens of entrepreneurs, inventors and families stopped by the SoCal Maker Convention at our grounds this weekend. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves – children were entertained by the drone races, parents saw how trash will soon be taken out and hobbyists were in complete awe by the robots. Check out this quick video:

The driving force and motivation behind this event is the emerging “Maker Movement” – a movement of amateurs, hobbyists, entrepreneurs, DIYers, students, and professionals united by nothing but the common desire to tinker, design, hack, innovate and invent.

The great thing about the Maker Movement is that it is not a movement you join. It’s a movement you’re already a part of as long as you have a fundamental curiosity about the world and the basic human impulse to create something.

With that said, start thinking and build something. You’ll be surprised by how much fun you’ll have. icon smile Convention for Makers Comes to Fairplex Hope to see you next year!
