Our resident horticulturist, Don Delano is starting to seed tomatoes on The Farm for early March planting. He stopped by and shared a few tips that you can use to grow your own supply at home!
Urban Gardening: Homegrown Tomatoes
Spring will be here before you know it, and with it a craving for fresh salads, sandwiches and pastas. Tomatoes are the perfect addition to all of these!
In order to have ripe tomatoes come March, you’ll want to start growing them 12-14 weeks out. That can be difficult to do in the middle of January when the weather is cold and, lately, rainy.
Don suggests starting the growing process indoors to keep them above 60 degrees. If you have the resources, you can use bottom heat mats outdoors too. Don’t forget to give your plants plenty of sunshine!
