Could you imagine our grounds full of robots? If you can’t, that’s okay because in 3 days you won’t have to imagine anything – robots will be here and they will be taking over Fairplex for DARPA’s Robotics Challenge Finals.
In case you are wondering, the primary technical goal of the DRC is to develop human-supervised ground robots capable of executing complex tasks in dangerous, degraded, human-engineered environments. Those competing in the DRC have developed robots that can utilize standard tools and equipment commonly available in human environments, ranging from hand tools to vehicles. In other words, let’s just say that we could be meeting some of our future first responders.
In the next couple of days, 25 teams from around the world will set up shop on our grounds and conduct some last minute testing to make sure everything runs smoothly. Getting here was not an easy task and here is the breakdown of where our finalists are coming from: half of the teams are from the United States, five are from Japan, three from Korea, two from Germany, one China, one from Italy and one from Hong Kong.
Here are some of the robots that will be competing for the coveted $2 million grand prize.
We should also mention that DARPA plans to award $1 million to the runner-up and $500,000 to the third-place team.
This event is free and perfect for all ages, so prepare to have a blast with your family and friends! To follow the event online or for more info visit www.theroboticschallenge.org.
