Fairplex Snapshot: Auto Class Graduation

The Career & Technical Education Center at Fairplex provides students with real-life skills for a variety of industries, including the auto industry.

Yesterday we had the privilege of saying congratulations to 16 graduates of the Alex Xydias Center for Automotive Arts (AXC), who have successfully completed our extensive two-year auto program.

The class of 2017 is our biggest yet, and each student is certified in one or more areas of the industry. We’re very proud of all they have accomplished and wish them well as they continue their endeavors in the field!

We’re celebrating our Career & Technical Education (CTEC) students this evening at the annual Scooper Bowl Fundraiser and Showcase in the Farm at Fairplex!

Our art students have created beautiful hand-made ceramic bowls this semester, which will be available for sale for $15. Once purchased, guests can fill their bowl with all-you-can-eat ice cream and check out the rest of the showcase.

Our high school students have worked hard all semester on various projects, ranging from the automotive arts to fashion design to horticulture. It’s always inspiring to see the talent and dedication these students and their teachers spend learning new skills.

The Scooper Bowl is happening now – 6 p.m. so stop by if you can! Parking available through Gate 12.

Summer Learning at Fairplex

For us, summer is the start of our busy season. We’re in full Fair mode, getting ready for September. But that’s not our only focus during these months — it wouldn’t be Fairplex if there wasn’t an educational component happening too! Here are some of our summer learning programs for all ages:

Fairplex TLC ceramics Summer Learning at Fairplex Career & Technical Education Classes: Our Career & Technical Education Center (CTEC) is offering summer courses for high school students, beginning in June. Students can take advantage of a number of programs, including courses in 2D design, ceramics, culinary skills and the auto entry. View full class descriptions and information about applying here.

Photography Classes: We’ve partnered with Feel the Touch Photography for summer photography classes at the Millard Sheets Art Center. Join us for the opening reception on Tuesday, May 23 5 – 7 p.m. at the gallery and learn more about this program. More information can be found at feelthetouchphotographyclasses.com.

Palates & Palettes Wine & Paint Night (21+): Okay so this one might be a little more fun than education-based, but it’s still a chance to learn! Our wine & paint nights feature a different artist each month, and art classes are led by a professional instructor. Guests can indulge in wine and food inspired by the featured artist’s hometown, while learning to paint one of his/her great works. Learn more here.

Family Art Workshops: While most of our workshops are fully booked, we encourage you to get on the waiting list for our popular Family Workshops! Held once a month at the Millard Sheets Art Center, these workshops give children and their parents the opportunity to create something together, while learning a bit about art history. Our final session takes place in June and draws inspiration from John Svenson. Learn about Tlingit Indians art, look at examples of their art and talk about how it influenced Svenson’s work! Learn more here

Farm Workshops: Our Farm team works hard to provide the local community with free learning opportunities, from field trips to gardening workshops to partnerships with other organizations. Stay tuned for information on upcoming events! To learn more about The Farm at Fairplex, click here.

Fairplex Snapshot: Art Lessons at Millard Sheets Art Center

Fairplex TLC ceramics 300x300 Fairplex Snapshot: Art Lessons at Millard Sheets Art Center The Millard Sheets Art Center lies in a pretty corner of Fairplex, surrounded by trees and set back from the hustle and bustle of the expo halls and grandstand.

Deceptively small from the front, the art center includes a spacious gallery and several classrooms for pottery, painting, ceramics and other programs. It is in these classrooms that high school students dedicated an entire semester to learning about the fine arts.

Our Career & Technical Education Center (CTEC) art classes focus on creation, research, exhibition and communication of fine art and design, preparing students for continued study and work in college or in the workplace. We’re proud of the progress our students make each semester!

Proud of our CTEC students!

We’re taking a moment to congratulate our Career & Technical Education Center culinary students for their hard work in the California ProStart Management and Culinary Competition earlier this week!

Our students were challenged with creating an appetizer, entrée and dessert within one hour, using only two butane burners. Our five students worked together as a team to cook:

  • Appetizer: Octopus ceviche (Peruvian and Mexican) served with corn chips and sweet potato chips
  • Entrée: Seared pork tenderloin with a Peruvian cilantro sauce and a Mexican Anaheim chili sauce served with sautéed baby potatoes and juilienned rainbowl carrots
  • Dessert: Homemade avocado ice cream two ways: 1) Peruvian caramelized plantains and 2) Mexican brunoised Tajine jicama with dark chocolate shavings

We’re incredibly proud of their accomplishments and look forward to seeing where they go in the future! Congratulations to all for your hard work and your determination to learn and succeed.
