Proud of our CTEC students!

We’re taking a moment to congratulate our Career & Technical Education Center culinary students for their hard work in the California ProStart Management and Culinary Competition earlier this week!

Our students were challenged with creating an appetizer, entrée and dessert within one hour, using only two butane burners. Our five students worked together as a team to cook:

  • Appetizer: Octopus ceviche (Peruvian and Mexican) served with corn chips and sweet potato chips
  • Entrée: Seared pork tenderloin with a Peruvian cilantro sauce and a Mexican Anaheim chili sauce served with sautéed baby potatoes and juilienned rainbowl carrots
  • Dessert: Homemade avocado ice cream two ways: 1) Peruvian caramelized plantains and 2) Mexican brunoised Tajine jicama with dark chocolate shavings

We’re incredibly proud of their accomplishments and look forward to seeing where they go in the future! Congratulations to all for your hard work and your determination to learn and succeed.

The car will be auctioned off today at the Mecum Auctions Collector-Car show here on campus. Students and teachers from the auto center took a tour of the event and auction operations yesterday during set-up and will be present this afternoon when the 1947 Lincoln Continental crosses the auction block.

Our auto education program has been built in collaboration with automotive business owners and classic car enthusiasts from the Inland Valley.

Thanks to our rich history with car events, we have been able to provide our students with a number of wonderful educational opportunities to better equip them for a career in the automotive industry.

Thank you Mecum for a great partnership with The Learning Centers!

Fairplex Snapshot: Souper Bowl 2016

The Souper Bowl is one of our favorite end-of-year fundraisers!

Our Career & Technical Education (CTEC) students have made beautiful, unique ceramic bowls, which our guests can purchase for $15 each. Once bowls have been selected, guests can fill them up with delicious hot soup, while chatting with fellow donors and meeting the students themselves.

This year, for an extra $5, guests also learned how to make ceramic bowls in small sessions led by students. Not a bad way to start the season off!

CTEC Art Classes: We are nearing the end of our fall semester of our ceramics classes at the Career & Technical Education Center. We’ll be back in 2017 with more learning opportunities for local high school students.

Reed Fine Art Program: In addition to the above programs, we also provide advanced art courses in painting and drawing to students committed to an entire year of study. This no-cost, scholarship program allows art students to explore their creativity through weekly instruction, open studio, guided practice and other skills needed in the art world. We’re wrapping up our fall session and will continue next year in the spring.

Studio Arts: Our Studio Arts classes are open to artists of all ages. We offer a total of four 9-week sessions per year. Again, we are wrapping up our fall courses, but are excited to introduce more opportunities in 2017!

In addition to the programs above, we also host family workshops, art shows, special classes, and wine & paint events throughout the year. Check back for learning opportunities in 2017!

Fairplex Weekend Recap: Wine, birds and a relay

Fairplex Events Cheersmichaeljordan 225x300 Fairplex Weekend Recap: Wine, birds and a relay Cheers: LA’s Wine, Spirits, Beer & Food Festival
Our annual fundraiser for The Learning Centers at Fairplex was this Saturday evening out at The Farm!

Guests took their time tasting the various wines, spirits and beers from the Los Angeles International Competitions from earlier this year.

Guests learned how to make craft cocktails from a mixologist, dined on food truck fare, both savory and sweet, and hit the dance floor once the sun went down.

Our silent auction, which also benefits The Learning Centers at Fairplex, had some great items up for bid.

All in all, we had a great time and we look forward to hosting again next year!

Relay For Life Pomona
We had the pleasure of hosting the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life this weekend as well. It is always touching to see a community come together, especially against a disease which affects so many people.

Everybody’s Bird Mart
We closed out the weekend with Everybody’s Bird Mart. Toucans, parrots, canaries, cockatoos and more set up camp in our expo halls as pet owners shopped for treats, toys, cages, vitamins and all the other bird necessities.

All in all it was another busy but fun weekend at Fairplex. Time to rest up a bit and then it’s hitting the ground running for our KABOOM! 4th of July celebration. Can’t wait!

Welcome to the CDC Garden

Our five-acre urban farm provides food for the Sheraton Fairplex Hotel and serves as a classroom for our agriculture classes, but it’s not the only place where crops are grown on campus.

TLC CDC garden2 Welcome to the CDC Garden

Our Child Development Center (CDC) has its own special garden, tucked into a corner of the playground. It is here that students learn how to plant and sow a variety of fresh vegetables year-round.

TLC CDC garden3 Welcome to the CDC Garden

In addition to teaching students how to care for a garden, we’re also able to expand these little ones’ palates to numerous raw vegetables. We also teach students how to make things like kale chips, using ingredients from the crops they grow in the garden.
