Convention for “Makers” Comes to Fairplex

Dozens of entrepreneurs, inventors and families stopped by the SoCal Maker Convention at our grounds this weekend. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves – children were entertained by the drone races, parents saw how trash will soon be taken out and hobbyists were in complete awe by the robots. Check out this quick video:

The driving force and motivation behind this event is the emerging “Maker Movement” – a movement of amateurs, hobbyists, entrepreneurs, DIYers, students, and professionals united by nothing but the common desire to tinker, design, hack, innovate and invent.

The great thing about the Maker Movement is that it is not a movement you join. It’s a movement you’re already a part of as long as you have a fundamental curiosity about the world and the basic human impulse to create something.

With that said, start thinking and build something. You’ll be surprised by how much fun you’ll have. icon smile Convention for Makers Comes to Fairplex Hope to see you next year!

Dr. Oktoberfest visits Fairplex (+ GIVEAWAY)

Dr. Oktoberfest takes over Oktoberfest at Fairplex

As October nears an end so does Oktoberfest at Fairplex. This is the last weekend to get your fill of bratwurst, burgers and beer on our grounds so we recommend coming out for an evening or two. Dr. Oktoberfest made a visit to Fairplex this past weekend to check out the Oktoberfest activities and make sure his patients were having as much fun as possible.

We would like to get just a few more of you into the celebration so we are doing a FINAL giveaway for the weekend. Like our past two giveaways, this package will include the following:

  • 2 Oktoberfest admission tickets
  • 2 sixteen oz. beer coupons
  • 2 meal passes
  • 1 Oktoberfest hat

To enter, just leave a comment telling us your favorite Fall tradition in the box below. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, October 23 at 3 p.m.

Good luck and we hope you can make it out to Oktoberfest before we close for the year. As the video says… it’s your prescription for fun!

FOOD ALERT: Move over Kit Kats, there’s a new candy in town

lancaster hersheys1 300x159 FOOD ALERT: Move over Kit Kats, theres a new candy in town Halloween is right around the corner and grocery stores have already lined their shelves with an abundance of candy.

Just in time for this sugar-loaded holiday, Hershey announced plans to launch a new candy brand for this first time in 30 years.

Candy favorites like Hershey’s Kisses, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kats and Almond Joys all fall under the Hershey umbrella. Now a new brand will join the ranks of peanut butter, milk chocolate and wafers: Caramel.

The newest member of the Hershey family is Lancasters. These soft caramel crèmes will hit stores in January 2014 in three flavors: vanilla caramel, vanilla raspberry and regular caramel. The soft, creamy candy has been described as a ‘rich and indulgent’ experience.

Sounds like a sweet deal to us.

Oktoberfest Giveaway

Fairplex is an extremely diverse campus that transforms from a full-blown Fair to an off-road expo to a blacklight obstacle course… and that was just one weekend. Our next major event is Oktoberfest, opening this Thursday, Oct. 10th and running every Thurs-Sun until Oct. 27th.

Oktoberfest 2012

What was once the building that housed the L.A. County Fair’s America’s Kids and Plaza de las Americas is being changed into a Bavarian wonderland of beer, brats and bands. If 32 oz. steins of craft beer and a buffet of hamburgers, sausage links and bratwurst tastes heavenly and the idea of the Chicken Dance and/or rocking out to the sounds of Queen and Journey sounds ideal, Oktoberfest might be worth checking out.

It’s been more than a year since we’ve done a giveaway on this blog and we thought, what better time to do one than in celebration of the opening weekend of Oktoberfest?

The Opening Weekend prize package includes:

  • 2 Oktoberfest admission tickets
  • 2 sixteen oz. beers of your choice
  • $20 in food bucks
  • 1 Oktoberfest souvenir cup

To enter, all you need to do is leave a comment with your favorite beer in the box below. The competition will close on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. We will announce the winner on this blog.

Prost! (Cheers!)

Crunched, munched and delivered fresh: Big data for the food industry

Food Genius Reports Crunched, munched and delivered fresh: Big data for the food industryPhoto taken from foodtechconnect.com

Big data.

One of the biggest buzz words in marketing and one of the most effective ways to analyze consumer and commercial behavior.

The question in today’s business world isn’t whether we can gather a large amount of information, but how we present it and what we do with it afterward.

The new buzz word: Instantaneous marketing. And luckily for the restaurant world, big data and the food industry are on it.

Food Genius–once a simple restaurant finder tool for foodies–transformed itself into the analyzer of all big data for the United States food industry. Food Genius has grown up to be a data-driven restaurant menu trends machine. Food baby turned food monster. In a good way.

The best part? You choose what you want to know about, input your specifics into the site and they collect all the data and analyze it for you–instantly.

Want to find out about quinoa? Food Genius tells you who is serving it, how many restaurants (and regions) are using it and what dishes are utilizing the ingredient.

Information includes everything from menu pricing to consumer behavior to which chef is using what ingredients where and, in spite of the many calculations needed for accurate statistics, the information is presented in a clean and precise manner.

It’s big data made user-friendly. Crunching numbers, skipping the spreadsheet and going right into presentation mode. The best of both worlds.

Does it come with a price? Yes… and it’s not exactly cheap (as low as $2,000 a month,) but considering how restaurants can instantly use the site as a research and marketing tool, it might be worth shelling out the extra dough.

Just some food for thought. (Yes… I went there.)
