Pomona Foundation Field Trip at Fairplex

Yesterday we had the pleasure of hosting a field trip for Pomona families! We partnered with the Pomona Library Foundation‘s Summer Field Trip program and provided tours of The Farm at Fairplex and NHRA Motorsports Museum.

Fairplex TLC fieldtrip 1024x764 Pomona Foundation Field Trip at Fairplex A total of 52 people joined us for the day. These families are a part of the Pomona Library’s after-school tutoring sessions and each summer they go on a series of field trips around LA County.

We are proud to be part of such a great program. We had a lot of fun sharing knowledge about urban farming and the history of the Southern California auto industry with our community. Our volunteers and staff alike really enjoyed connecting with our local children and parents.

Special thanks to Dr. Perlman, Councilmember Gonzalez and our volunteers for making this event possible! We hope our guests had an educational and memorable day with us.

Happy 90th Birthday Mimi!

Fairplex TLC Mimi 252x300 Happy 90th Birthday Mimi!

Mimi poses with our CEO, Miguel Santana at her 90th birthday celebration in The Farm at Fairplex

How many lifetimes can a person experience? For Mimi Figueroa, that number is four… so far.

Mimi has volunteered with us for 15 years, working in the Flower & Garden Pavilion during Fair and, more recently, in The Farm at Fairplex.

She calls her years with the Fair her “fourth life,” having had an extraordinary number of life experiences before coming to us:

Mimi grew up in Argentina, eventually moving to France where she was a professional ballerina, dancing for many years. After that, her “second life” began when she joined the famous Ringling Bros. as a performer — rollerskating while suspended 100 ft in the air. She traveled with the troupe for three years, performing everywhere from England to as far as Russia.

Mimi eventually moved to America for school, beginning what she calls her “third life” as a quality & control inspector for none other than NASA.

Several careers and continents later, we’re glad she now spends her time with us! She has been a resident of Pomona for more than 40 years.

Yesterday we had the honor of celebrating Mimi’s 90th birthday with her. Our community team invited her fellow volunteers and her other friends to The Farm at Fairplex for a luncheon celebration.

Her spunky attitude and love for what she does brings a positive energy to our team that we value greatly.Thank you Mimi for all you do for Fairplex, and happy birthday!

Fairplex Snapshot: Auto Class Graduation

The Career & Technical Education Center at Fairplex provides students with real-life skills for a variety of industries, including the auto industry.

Yesterday we had the privilege of saying congratulations to 16 graduates of the Alex Xydias Center for Automotive Arts (AXC), who have successfully completed our extensive two-year auto program.

The class of 2017 is our biggest yet, and each student is certified in one or more areas of the industry. We’re very proud of all they have accomplished and wish them well as they continue their endeavors in the field!

Field Trips on The Farm

We started hosting field trips in The Farm a couple years ago and haven’t stopped since!

This week we had the pleasure of hosting Upland High School students. It was fun to see them explore our urban farm and learn more about agriculture, horticulture and the culinary industry.

Fairplex TLC FieldTrips cooking4 1024x768 Field Trips on The Farm Our very own Chef David Teig took time out of his day to teach students on the importance of good food, and taught them how to make Farm vegetable pizzas using our Farm kitchen facilities.

All in all, a fun day for everyone!

Summer Learning at Fairplex

For us, summer is the start of our busy season. We’re in full Fair mode, getting ready for September. But that’s not our only focus during these months — it wouldn’t be Fairplex if there wasn’t an educational component happening too! Here are some of our summer learning programs for all ages:

Fairplex TLC ceramics Summer Learning at Fairplex Career & Technical Education Classes: Our Career & Technical Education Center (CTEC) is offering summer courses for high school students, beginning in June. Students can take advantage of a number of programs, including courses in 2D design, ceramics, culinary skills and the auto entry. View full class descriptions and information about applying here.

Photography Classes: We’ve partnered with Feel the Touch Photography for summer photography classes at the Millard Sheets Art Center. Join us for the opening reception on Tuesday, May 23 5 – 7 p.m. at the gallery and learn more about this program. More information can be found at feelthetouchphotographyclasses.com.

Palates & Palettes Wine & Paint Night (21+): Okay so this one might be a little more fun than education-based, but it’s still a chance to learn! Our wine & paint nights feature a different artist each month, and art classes are led by a professional instructor. Guests can indulge in wine and food inspired by the featured artist’s hometown, while learning to paint one of his/her great works. Learn more here.

Family Art Workshops: While most of our workshops are fully booked, we encourage you to get on the waiting list for our popular Family Workshops! Held once a month at the Millard Sheets Art Center, these workshops give children and their parents the opportunity to create something together, while learning a bit about art history. Our final session takes place in June and draws inspiration from John Svenson. Learn about Tlingit Indians art, look at examples of their art and talk about how it influenced Svenson’s work! Learn more here

Farm Workshops: Our Farm team works hard to provide the local community with free learning opportunities, from field trips to gardening workshops to partnerships with other organizations. Stay tuned for information on upcoming events! To learn more about The Farm at Fairplex, click here.
