Fairplex Ambassadors at LACF

LACF Blog Volunteer1 300x199 Fairplex Ambassadors at LACF

We’ve said it before and we will gladly say it again: Fair volunteers are a vital part of LACF’s core. Behind the Fair exhibits and learning experiences are hundreds of volunteers, selflessly giving their time and energy to the FairKids Field Trip program and Fair visitors. One such volunteer? Julie Crocetti.

Joining the Fairplex Ambassador Program

Blog ThoughtfulThursday Julie 168x300 Fairplex Ambassadors at LACF

“I first started volunteering about four years ago,” Julie said. “I came to the Fair to buy tickets for a show and saw the Administration building. I decided to walk in and ask about volunteering for the Fair.”

Julie has been a part of our family ever since.

“[Volunteering] gets under your skin, then into the bloodstream and soon you’ll want to keep doing more of it,” she said.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering allows Julie to enjoy one of her life passions: teaching. Prior to retiring, she worked as a hospice director and enjoyed teaching her employees best practices. After she left her job she found herself asking the question: “now what?”

“That’s when I connected with Fairplex,” she said. “I needed fun and purpose in my life. Volunteering with the Fair fills that need.”

Julie now gets to use her passion for teaching at LACF. She enjoys sharing “hidden” Fair facts with FairKids students, especially information about the Flower & Garden Pavilion, and the wild animals in the Atrium.

Julie comes to LACF each year with the mentality of giving guests their best Fair experience possible. Her favorite part of the Fair Ambassador program? The LACF family. “It’s like a homecoming [every year.] It’s a family. The staff is great too. Everyone is a joy to work with.”

FairKids Field Trip Program

“Every day at the Fair is an adventure.”

Volunteering has its fair share of challenges, but Julie loves what she does.

“It’s a worthwhile program to give your time to. We wouldn’t be here year after year if it wasn’t. Every day at the Fair is an adventure, and every year is different and new.”

Not only does Julie bring learning experiences to life for students and teachers, she mentors new volunteers too, and makes sure the whole team gets along. She goes above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to being a Fair Ambassador. But that’s not how she sees it.

If you told her she was an amazing volunteer, she would shrug her shoulders, smile and say, “I’m just doing what I came here to do: help out.”

Throwback Thursday: LACF in the 1930s

Throwback to the 1930s, when the Los Angeles County Fair was just getting its footing at Fairplex! At the time this photo was taken, the Fair was only 10-years-old or so. It’s crazy to think how much things have changed over the years. If you were to take a photo from the same angle, you wouldn’t be able to see Picnic Hill for all the trees and plants that have grown in that area!

Only slight traces of LACF remains on campus, including this fun archway that led guests into Mojo’s Wild & Crazy Lagoon. All traces of our favorite animals are long gone (until next year!) but it’s fun to walk around reminisce about the Fair:

Halloween is less than two weeks away and we are in full celebratory mode! Our Creative department knows how to make things look festive without the cheese factor and we wanted to share some of our fun DIY Halloween projects with you today:

Halloween Facades

Our Creative department made this display entirely by hand for our DIY Design Studio during LACF. If you have a fence in your front or backyard, it’s easy to put up fun Halloween signs, perfect for a photo backdrop during parties. For a little extra variety, our team used a witch’s hat for the “A” in Halloween and a pumpkin for the “O.”

DIY Halloween Prep 1024x768 Halloween DIY Ideas from Fairplex Our team used a blend of giant sunflowers, festive fabric garlands and other Halloween paraphernalia (a plastic skeleton, crows, a broomstick) to create a welcoming, “spooky” facade:

Fairplex Weekend Recap: Three festivals, one campus

It was another rockin’ weekend at Fairplex!

We had not one, not two, but three festivals happening at Fairplex, all at the same time. We stopped by on Saturday to see how things were going:

ramen 225x300 Fairplex Weekend Recap: Three festivals, one campus We started the day off at the Ramen Yokocho Festival. Inside Expo Hall 4 we found a beautiful car show, the Doraemon art exhibit and folks chowing down on bowls of Ramen (of course.) All the Ramen vendors were situated outside and the entire walkway was full of the delicious scent of noodle broth.

Of course we had to try some for ourselves.

Next up: Moon Block Party. This festival brought music fans of all ages together for a full one-day festival that included rock bands like The Black Lips and Band of Skulls to our infield. There were art displays, clothing and jewelry vendors and food trucks too. Spoon closed out the night with style to an adoring crowd.

Last but not least, we stopped by our own Oktoberfest. Weekend #2 was even more lively (if that’s possible) than last week. If you weren’t doing the Chicken Dance with The Rheinlanders inside then you were probably rocking out to Led Zepagain in the courtyard.

It was fun to see such diverse events at Fairplex this weekend. From the artsy folks at Moon Block Party to the families enjoying themselves at the Ramen Festival to the partygoers at Oktoberfest, it seemed like everyone had a great time.

The fun doesn’t slow down for us any time soon — We have our final Oktoberfest celebration (Oct. 24-26) and The Color Run (Oct. 25) coming up, and then it’s time to celebrate Halloween in the form of the HARD Day of the Dead EDM festival (Nov. 1 – 2.)

Thank you for coming out and joining us this weekend! We hope to see your faces again soon!
