Ambassador Spotlight: Sylvia Chapman

Many of our Fairplex ambassadors are selfless people dedicated to making a difference on our campus and in their own communities. Sylvia Chapman is one such volunteer and has recently received the 2014 San Dimas Women of the Year “Unsung Heroines” award. Congratulations Sylvia!

Sylvia dedicates her time to volunteering not only with Fairplex but also for the city of San Dimas. She is the president of the San Dimas Sheriff’s Booster Club, has spent more than ten years volunteering for the San Dimas Posse HEART program and serves as a station and patrol volunteer for the Sheriff’s department. We are truly lucky to have someone like her in our community and are honored to call her a Fairplex ambassador.

Pomona Art Walk:  Browse for a unique Mother’s Day gift and support the growing Pomona art community at the Pomona Art Walk. Hundreds of local artists display their works along the streets and in more than two dozen galleries in the city. Elements include paintings, photography, ceramics and jewelry. Many shops, studios and restaurants are open late as part of the festivities. Visit the Art Walk on Saturday from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

NBA / NHL Playoffs: If your mom happens to be an NBA or NHL fan, this is your weekend. The Clippers face off against the OKC Thunder tonight in Game 3 of the playoffs at the Staples Center. Saturday the Los Angeles Kings play against the Anaheim Ducks in Game 4 at the Honda Center in Anaheim. If you’re lucky, you have tickets to either of these games, but when it comes to the playoffs, sports bars are the next best thing. Of course we recommend Finish Line Sports Grill and taking advantage of our mega-TVs, relaxed atmosphere, daily specials and happy hour prices.

Science Discovery Day: The Alf Museum of Paleontology is hosting a special science discovery day this Saturday. Spend some quality time with the family and check out the learning stations, touch tables and crafts activities. Only $3 per person. Children 4 and under are free. For more information click here.

Mother’s Day Brunch: McKinley’s Grille offers a delicious brunch menu, made just for Mother’s Day. Chef David Teig is whipping up pancakes, omelets, pastries, crepes bacon, sausages, chicken, turkey, salads, dessert and even a kids buffet. This Sunday, enjoy a relaxed meal at our restaurant or dine al fresco in our patio. Click here for the full menu.

Mother’s Day for moms in need

mothers day avalon 1024x734 Mothers Day for moms in need Early Mother’s Day makeovers at Fairplex

The Avalon at Fairplex is usually reserved for holiday parties, speaking sessions and dinners but today it has been transformed into a fully functioning beauty salon! 150 women in need — mothers who have endured domestic abuse, substance addiction, cancer, poverty and other hardships in life — came to Fairplex for a full morning of pampering.

These special moms received pedicures, manicures, hair cuts and makeup tips from hair stylists and makeup artists while their children made Happy Mother’s Day crafts under the supervision of trained volunteers at The Learning Centers at Fairplex.

We would like to give a special thank you to Total Restoration Ministries and Mothers Understanding Mothers Support for bringing this great event to our campus!

Fair-y Tale Weddings at LACF: For the first time in history, Fairplex will host four free weddings during the Los Angeles County Fair (LACF). For the past two months couples from all over the country have submitted entries in hopes of being chosen for a wedding at the Fair.

Four winning couples will receive weddings that include the venue (one of four unique locations within the Fairgrounds), decor, flower arrangements, lighting/sound, a wedding officiate, champagne toast, wedding cake, guest invitations and party favors, an overnight stay at the Sheraton Honeymoon Suite and of course, a full day of fun at LACF.

The competition comes to a close on Monday, May 12 during which time a panel of judges will decide who will say “I do” at the Fair.

Tapatio-Spiked Pineapple Cilantro Chili Sorbet in LA: In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, CoolHaus has partnered with The Hundreds x Tapatio to bring Angelenos the limited-edition Tapatio-Spiked Pineapple Cilantro Chili Sorbet. It tastes exactly like it sounds. Instead of fudge or sprinkles, the already-spicy dessert will come doused in the ever-popular Tapatio sauce.

Introducing the new Snapchat

Social Media: Snapchat introduced direct messaging and live video chat to users on Thursday of last week. The latest upgrade is a hybrid of Instagram Direct and FaceTime, albeit all messages, photos and videos are deleted as soon as they are read by the recipient. The upgrade also included a new look, with minimalism font and design. Users are still able to send photo/video to multiple users and the My Story feature.

Our bi-weekly Event Industry News post includes event trends, social media and technology industry updates and events news from Los Angeles County.
