Fair Food Friday: Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

Happy Fair Food Friday everyone! It’s the last weekend of the Fair, so here are some of  our sweetest treats to try before it’s too late!

1. Afters Ice Cream Milky Bun
Donuts are delicious. Ice cream is delicious. And when you put them together? Delicious. This milky bun from Afters Ice Cream is filled with their cookie monster ice cream and dipped in pieces of Oreos.

2. Unicorn Nitro Pop
This pop corn is covered in colorful caramel and dunked in liquid nitrogen. Not only is it delicious, but it is fun too! Pop some in your mouth and watch as vapor comes out of your nose.

3. Conchita Ice Cream Sandwich
Mi Cafecito located in Mi Poco LA is serving up delicious ice cream sandwiches on conchitas and orejitas. Horchata ice cream on pan dulce makes for a great combination to satisfy that sweet tooth.

4. Mexican Funnel Cake
Mexican funnel cake puts a sweet twist on the traditional fair funnel cake. Made with churros and topped with whipped cream, this is a great dessert to share with the family… or enjoy it all on your own!

5. Fabes shakes
Check out these Insta-worthy shakes! What could be wrong with a mason jar full of your favorite flavored shake topped with whip cream and a whole donut? You need a jumbo straw for this one!

Fair Food Friday: Healthy Food at the Fair?!

Yes we are shamelessly addicted to Chicken Charlie’s deep-fried bacon s’mores, and Tasti Chips doused in gooey cheese and sauce, but there are plenty of healthy (and delicious) Fair foods to try too! Here’s a quick round-up of our go-to favorites:

Healthy Food at the LA County Fair

1. Vegan Jackfruit Tacos

plant food for people jackfruit tacos

New this year, the Jackfruit Tacos (and nachos, tortas and bean bowls) are a must-try, whether you’re vegan or not. Refreshing, filling and just the right size, this is a vegan favorite, both at the Fair and when they’re out and about in Los Angeles.

2. Pappa’s Artisanal Woodfired Pizzas (Yes, pizza!)

Local foodie favorite Pappa’s has brought their kitchen to The Farm, whipping up delicious harvest bowls and wood-fired pizzas. Every day they select some of their ingredients straight from our Farm! It doesn’t get much fresher than that.

3. Chicken Charlie’s Maui Chicken

Chicken Charlie serves up a killer meal: grilled chicken, pineapple and rice, all arranged in a carved out pineapple shell. Might as well stock up on protein while you’re indulging your sugary and savory Fair cravings, right? There is also a shrimp option if you prefer that.

Bonus: he also offer grilled chicken kabobs, hummus and pita bread :)

4. Cold Treats: Terri’s Berries, AB Sorbet and Pineapple Dole Whip
Terri’s Berries offers a variety of fruit smoothies, while AB Sorbet and the Mexican Funnel Cake stands offer gluten-free, vegan sweet treats for your enjoyment. You can find any and all of these stands using our Food Finder on our website!

Coconut Water
Our giant coconut waters are a fan favorite! Not only are they full of electrolytes and totally hydrating, they’re also delicious! Just a sip and you’ll be craving the beaches of Hawaii.

While we are HUGE advocates of the deep-fried, battered, gooey, cheesy, decadent treats that the Fair has to offer, we highly recommend you try one of these healthy food items the next time you’re here. Equally delicious, equally satisfying, but just a tad better for your body than all the rest of our treats.

Fair Food Friday: Dessert Heaven

Earlier this year we covered some of our favorite Fair food items, including the Affogato as a top dessert choice.

Now that we’ve had a few days to sink our teeth (literally) into the rest of our Fair food, we’ve compiled a list of our must-try desserts. Take a look, take a taste:

1. Deep-fried Bacon S’mores (Chicken Charlie’s)

Nothing could have prepared us for the decadent heaven that is Chicken Charlie’s deep-fried s’more. Marshmallow and chocolate, perfect offset by savory bacon bits makes this an easy top pick for our sweet tooth cravings. Find it at any of Charlie’s booths at the Fair!

2. Candied Apples (Terri’s Berries)

Terri’s Berries features a colorful array of fruit treats, like chocolate-dipped strawberries, fruit smoothies, and one of our favorites — the candied apple! Find it right across from Chicken Charlie’s off of Broadway & Palm!

3. Mexican Funnel Cake

There are churros. There are funnel cakes. And then there’s this thing called the Mexican Funnel Cake and it is the best of both worlds and then some. Find it on Broadway near the Longboard Bar!

4. Bucket of Cookies (Cathy’s Cookies)

chocolate chip cookies

A simple idea, but a genius one. Instead of buying a singular chocolate chip cookie, why not buy a whole bucket? Because you can never have enough freshly baked cookies! Visit Cathy’s Cookies on The Farm Road for some good old-fashioned chocolate chip cookies (by the bucket!)

5.  Dr. Bob’s Ice Cream

We would be remiss if we didn’t give a shout-out to the timeless Dr. Bob’s ice cream! Located near the Big Red Barn, Dr. Bob’s sundaes, cones and other sweets are one of our must haves at every Fair. Sometimes more than once in one season!

Other favorites: Cotton candy, soft-serve ice cream, the churro gelato sandwich, gourmet milkshakes, Chicken Charlie’s deep-fried Oreos and Klondike bars and, of course, the affogato from Fried-A-Fair.

Fair Food Friday: The Final Round-Up

We hit you Opening Weekend with a deep-fried extravaganza (which we’re still recovering from, by the way). On Week Two, we went gourmet with a meal at Maria’s Italian Kitchen and visit to Terri’s Berries. And last Friday, we dove into a full on sugar coma when we sampled anything and everything sweet at LACF.

Now that we’ve had a little bit of everything, we’re ready to reveal our top three FAVORITE dishes we’ve tried this year.

Fair Food Friday: The Final Round-Up

1. The Gelato Churro Sandwich

Three words: cinnamon, vanilla and sprinkles. Need we say more? We’re crossing our fingers that these delicious treats will make their way back to us next year.

2. Tasti Chips

A Fair classic and must-eat on our list. Tasti Chips are by far one of our favorite things to munch on, whether it’s matched with jalapenos, cheese, or plain. So much yum.

3. Thai Food

Believe it or not, one of our go-to dinners is the Thai food stand, specifically their garlic chicken, pad thai and veggie combo. It’s filling, delicious, and a nice break from our usual deep-fried Oreos and Chick On A Stick fare.

Fair Food Friday Giveaway

Last year we gave out a few fun facts about the history of funnel cake. Like most traditions, this Fair food staple has evolved and grown bigger over the years. What used to be a simple deep-fried treat with powered sugar sprinkled on top has turned into a decadent sugar-infested bonanza.

Last night I tried the Fair’s version of the funnel cake: battered doughy yum with whipped cream, strawberries, powdered sugar and a towering dollop of vanilla ice cream in the center of it all.

Exhibit A:

I’m still recovering from the sugar overload but if you still can’t get enough of the Fair food, you can enter our Fair Food Friday giveaway :)

One winner will receive 4 Fair tickets and 4 Hot Blog On A Stick tees! To enter, just leave a comment saying what your favorite funnel cake topping is. Winner will be announced tomorrow at 3 p.m.!

Good luck!

Fair Food Friday: A Deep-Fried Finale

Deep-fried Oreos

No Fair season would be complete without a blog post dedicated to all things deep-fried! You won’t find this much food craziness anywhere outside the Fair and certainly not in any restaurants. It’s no secret that Chicken Charlie is the King of all things deep-fried. He has it down to an art form AND a science. Think about it, how do you deep-fry ice cream, keep a warm, battered exterior and a frozen treat on the inside? He does it.

Deep-fried Dodger Dog

One of our newer items at the Fair are the deep-fried Dodger dogs. This L.A. team made a huge comeback this year, surprising fans and haters alike with a pretty good season! They were even #1 in the National League for awhile! Fans of all ages will remember with fondness stepping into the stadium and cheering on the boys in blue while munching on Dodger Dogs. Thank to Chicken Charlie, new memories can be made at the Fair, bringing a piece of baseball nostalgia to the grounds, deep-fried style.

Deep-fried cookie dough is next on the “must try” list. Talk about a warm, gooey mess! Looking deceptively tame in its powdered sugar cage, the cookie dough bursts forth in a taste of dough, chocolate and yes it oozes and oozes sugary deliciousness. You will definitely want to bring napkins along for this one, but the mess is worth it!

Those are just a few of the foods to try at the Fair. But the list of deep-fried novelties goes on:

  • Kool-Aid
  • Twinkies
  • Frog legs
  • Peanut butter & jelly
  • Klondike bars
  • Cereal
  • Thin Mints (yes, even Girl Scout cookies)
  • Pineapple
  • Spam

Whew! That’s one sugar-filled Fair Food Friday! We’re sad it’s our last one of the season but it has been a blast trying out all the different treats. Which ones were your favorite?
