There is one thing our team has in common, and that is our love of food. Every year we look forward to trying the newest, craziest Fair foods out there, and many of you are the same way!

This year, Fair fans consumed two fields of corn, 6,000 deep-fried bacon s’mores and 1,000 lbs (yes, POUNDS) of butter. Take a look at our infographic to see what else you ate this year:

Fair Food Friday: Dare To Indulge

With only two days of Fair left, it’s safe to say we’ve tried nearly every food item there is to try here (although there are some we haven’t reached yet… 1,200 choices are a lot to choose from.)

For this week’s Fair Food Friday, we are taking you through the most decadent, indulgent, sweetest, gooiest, craziest Fair foods we have had so far. Check it out!

Fair Food Friday: Dare To Indulge

1. Gourmet Milkshakes

Served in a mason jar, these super sweet, delicious treat is customized to your personal preferences. Whether you prefer whipped cream and a cherry on top, or crunched cookies mixed into your shake, there are a number of options to choose from.

2. Ice Cream

There are a number of places you can buy ice cream here at the Fair, and each stand has their own specialty, but we can guarantee you that all of them will leave your sweet tooth satisfied and reaching a sugar high in no time. We recommend Dr. Bob’s and Old Time Ice Cream for starters!

3. Texas-Size Donuts

These donuts are literally the size of your face. Served in a number of colors, sprinkles, and flavors, you won’t find these at your local Krispy Kreme! The only question is, do you share with your friends and dare to try and eat it all by yourself?

4. Chicken & Waffle On A Stick

Chicken Charlie NEVER fails to create something new, fun, and absolutely delicious at the Fair! While there are a number of items we could choose from (deep-fried bacon s’mores for one…), we had to go with the Chicken & Waffle On A Stick invention!

These are just a few of the amazing foods to try here at the Fair. There are tons of other indulgent choices, like the Dino Rib, bacon-wrapped pork belly, Mexican funnel cake and all the other delicious things we’ve covered in our past Fair Food Friday posts.

Bottoms Up

Are you one of those people who loves beer?  Did you know that LACF offers beer tasting classes?

Because they do!

You can find the class in the Beer, Wine, and Spirits Marketplace, attached to the Flower and Garden Pavilion.  Classes take place at noon, and are $15 per person.  Jason Torres leads the beer tasting classes, explaining the difference between craft and micro brewed beer, and the flavorful distinctions of IPA, Pale, and Porter brews (among others).  He also introduces students to some market lingo (Such at ‘Tap takeover’), and the correct way to drink the beverage.

Paired with these tasty brews are different food catered by local companies.  Today’s delicious sliders were courtesy of Brew & Meatball Company.  One of their tasty mini burgers was made with Wagu beef, which they also serve at their restaurant.

Just remember, you must be 21 or older to take part in these amazing (and shockingly educational) classes.

Fair Food Friday: Desserts on desserts on desserts

Tonight we listened to our sweet tooths and went on a smorgasbord of pure sugar…

Dip n' Dots Frappucino

First up, Dr. Bob’s Ice Cream! We’ve been craving a triple-scoop waffle cone since day one and we finally made it over to the Farm for some proper over-indulgence. Yum.

On the way out we encountered our favorite discovery of the day — Dippin’ Dots caramel frappuccinos! Yes, it’s true. And yes, we will be back. (And yes, they taste just as good as the ones at Starbucks ;) )

Next on the list, crepes. Sweet, divine, out-of-this-universe crepes. Tucked away on The Farm Road is a little crepe stand serving a perfect variety of sweet and savory options. We chose the Red White & Blue, a.k.a strawberries, blueberries, and whipped cream galore, with a little powdered sugar in the mix.

On the way back to our office we HAD to sample some of these little guys:

Sorbet is probably the “healthiest” dessert we have to offer at the Fair (besides Terri’s Berries) and it’s the perfect refreshment for a warm Friday night. Flavors: coconut, mango, pineapple, strawberry, orange and lemon.

After loading up on ice cream and whipped cream, the tart lemon flavors were the perfect contrast for our palates.

We haven’t event hit the carnival food yet, but we are determined to try the churro gelato and get our cotton candy fix first thing tomorrow (because those are totally acceptable breakfast foods, right?)

Cupcake Crazy

Sooo good!

September 12th was the annual fair Cupcake Contest, and wow, did all the entries look delicious.  Contestants submitted their recipes in July, all of which were homemade with ingredients you can find at your local stores (Them’s the rules!).  On the big day, each contestant brought six delectable offerings for this year’s judges.

Regina Young, Marissa Ceja, Carlos Velesqez, and Laurie Brandler were our four distinguished experts for today’s event.  All four were beyond pleased to take part, and were full of smiles throughout the event.

Participants were graded on four different aspects, of varying importance:

  • Overall Taste                        40%
  • Originality/Creativity             30%
  • Appearance/Presentation     20%
  • Ease of preparation              10%

After sampling from each of the 11 contestants, the judges picked three outstanding examples of this culinary delight.

In 3rd place, with her light and fluffy Lemon Blueberry with Lemon Buttercream cupcake, is April Burton!

2nd place goes to Pepper Parker, with her scrumptious Banana Pudding cupcakes.

The coveted 1st place is awarded to Monine Zerby, for her Boozy Caramel Apple cupcake.  Need I say more?  All participants then began a cupcake trading bonanza, and who could blame them, with all of the entries looking so mouth watering?

Sunday Funday: All About That Food

Are you a deep-fried fiend or more of an international foodie? Either way, we have you covered here at the LA County Fair.

There are at least a dozen ways to spend a Sunday Funday with us, but today we decided to indulge in some of our newest food concoctions, like the Michelaguas (refreshingly delicious), deep-fried guacamole and the world’s largest of most food items on the planet. Check out our findings:

The meal to end all meals: The Deep-fried Twinkie Burger

We walked you through the gnarly process of eating a Krispy Kreme double-cheeseburger. We expounded on the joys of Fair food. We even gave a shout-out to the Ramen Burger craze. But even our jaws dropped when we heard about this one.

We, the L.A. County Fair bloggers with a craving for Chicken Charlie’s latest and greatest, have to give a nod to these East Coasters for their latest invention: the deep-fried Twinkie burger. Yes. Deep-fried Twinkie burger. That’s a thing.

PYT, a burger joint in Philadelphia introduced the Deep-Fried Twinkie Burger to their menu this past weekend. The bun consists of a total of four deep-fried Twinkies with a beef and pork-belly burger sandwiched in between. The burger is covered in gooey American cheese with a few slices of bacon thrown in for good measure.

We can only gawk at our screens at this point but we wouldn’t be surprised if something akin to this makes it’s way to the Fair for next year. (No promises but hey, we brought you bacon-wrapped pickles and Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joes didn’t we?)

Fair Food Friday : Heat Wave

Most days at the Fair we like to switch things up… check out the latest from the creative minds at America’s Kids or hang out with the brilliance emanating from Genius or maybe even taking a stroll through the Garden Railroad. But on Fridays we are always, without fail, all. about. the food. It’s called Fair Food Fridays for a reason!

This weekend marks week 3 of the Fair, not to mention the hottest it’s been all month! (We are talking 100+ degrees people.) For those of you brave enough to venture out before the sun sets, there are plenty of snacks and drinks to help you stay cool. Here are my top five choices:

1. Hot Dog On A Stick Lemonade

What goes better with a crunchy corn dog than ice cold lemonade? Sweet, lemony fresh juice chilled with crushed ice cubes paired with some fries or your corn dog and you are set to relax in the shade or walk to your next “must do” of the day.

2. Dr. Bob’s Handcrafted Ice Cream

We’re not talking just any ice cream. We are talking Dr. Bob’s ice cream. As in, the ice cream made right here on the fairgrounds with flavors including Tahitian vanilla, cinnamon, Mississippi Mud, maple walnut, dark chocolate and several others. They even have a banana split doused in pineapple, whipped cream and fudge. It’s sweet, it’s yummy and a great reprieve from the heat. There’s more to life than Baskin Robbins and Coldstone’s Creamery after all!

3. Big Kona Huna Shaved Ice

With over 20 flavors to choose from, it’s not hard to create the perfect blend of flavors.

While favorites include Wild Cherry and Tiger’s Blood, my personal favorite is mango and strawberry.

If you want to be a little more adventurous, you can ask for it Hawaiian style and get your colorful ice doused in condensed milk. (It tastes better than it sounds.)

The best part? This icy, chilly concoction is only $5!

 

 

4. Dip n’ Dots

Dip n’ Dots brings cute and sweet to a whole new level. In a nut shell, Dip n’ Dots serves tiny, itsy bitsy ice cream circles in a dish for you to eat. Flavors include the standard vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, but birthday cake, cookie dough, banana split, moose tracks, strawberry cheesecake yogurt and even rainbow sherbert styles are offered as well! This has been a favorite treat of mine for many years and I am always glad it’s at the Fair!

5. Margaritas

For the 21+ crowd, sometimes all you need to forget the heat is a good drink. The margaritas can be found throughout the Fair and are a mixture of sweet and tangy, providing a wonderful escape from the incessant heat.

Our Friend, the Funnelcake

Funnel cake has been a fair food staple since the beginning. The crisp, powdered sweet treat can be found at amusement parks and fairgrounds throughout the world. Did you know that the funnel cake actually originated as a mid-morning snack in the Pennsylvania-Dutch region? Can you imagine digging into all that sugar before lunch?  Not a bad idea…

Funnel cakes are made by pouring batter (similar to the dough used for doughnuts) into hot cooking oil in a circular pattern and deep frying the contents until they turn a golden-brown. The batter consists of milk, eggs and flour among other ingredients.

Although delicious when eaten plain, funnel cakes are typically decorated in an assortment of goodies. Favorites include powdered sugar, jam and cinnamon. My personal favorite concoction is Nutella, strawberries and powdered sugar! Do you have a favorite combination? Maybe honey mixed with peanut butter? Melted chocolate mixed with marshmallows? Funnel Cake Fun Facts

  • Although a top tier FRIED dessert, the average funnel cake (6 inches in diameter) is less than 300 calories! Less calories means more room for food!
  • There is currently no official record of the world’s largest funnel cake. Any takers to be in the Guinness Book of World Records?
  • In Finland, funnel cakes are called tippaleipas and are served during May Day.
  • India, Bangladesh and Pakistan call their version of the funnel cake jalebi.

What is the Ultimate Fair Food?

Deep-fried, on a stick, smothered in chocolate or bathed in bacon. One of these, or all of these, probably have something to do with your favorite Fair food. With so many options, how can one choose?

You know my fave – Hot Dog on a Stick. The ones you can get at the mall just aren’t the same as the those battered, golden sticks of heaven you get here at the Fair. It must be the ambiance.

Our southern friends in Texas had their say recently in a story in DFW.com, a Dallas-Forth Worth-based web site that spotlights everything happening in the area, including the State Fair of Texas. The story asked what’s the most popular festival/fair food. Some mentioned treats like funnel cake but the overwhelming majority was for Giant Turkey Legs! The respondents had some good reasons for choosing turkey legs – easy to eat while walking and you can feed two for the price of one.
