What’s Cookin’ in Chicken Charlie’s Kitchen?

June 25, 2019

We are just 67 days away until the 2019 LA County Fair Goes POP Aug. 30 to Sept. 22 and we are getting HUNGRY! Everyone comes to the Fair to see the newest and best attractions, but behind all that walking and talking, your feet are being fueled by the deliciously fried food found around the fairgrounds!

Last year we introduced our $6.60 Menu in honor of our first-ever theme, Route 66.

The menu was filled with special food items that could be found all across the fairgrounds for just, you guessed it, $6.60! This year we’re bringing it back at just $6.50, and it’ll still be filled with some familiar and some not-so-familiar foods.

There was no better person to talk fair food with than Mr. Fair Food himself, Charlie Boghosian,  better known as Chicken Charlie! We caught up with Charlie in San Diego to see what he’ll be bringing to the Fair this year.

“I’m always thinking of how we can outdo last year because we always need to outdo ourselves,” Charlie said. “Ever since I invented Deep-Fried Oreos, the game started and now we always need to go bigger and better every year.”

Charlie laid out three of the newest items he’ll be bringing to the LA County Fair this year.

The first item we got to try was his $6.50 item, a Deep-Fried Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam Uncrustable.

The peanut butter and strawberry-filled Uncrustable is dipped in a red batter and fried to perfection. After, the sandwich is lathered with strawberry jam on top. Charlie then garnishes it with powdered sugar and sprinkles Fruity Pebbles to give it a POP of color!

The bright strawberry red pastry is one of Charlie’s latest and most colorful concoctions.

Next, we have a delightful treat anyone can enjoy easily on the go, Deep-Fried Hummus!

Little balls of hummus are dipped in batter and then fried to a flaky, golden perfection. Each bite gives you a full burst of hummus and the crunchy satisfaction of a pita chip altogether. Each plate will be served with a side of refreshingly tasty tzatziki sauce.

Last but not least, we would like to introduce to you…wait for it…the DEEP-FRIED CHIMICHANGA!

*Cue dramatic music*

This monstrous burrito, weighing in well over two pounds, is deep fried to a perfect crispness and holds the most delicious secrets inside of its green tortilla.

Charlie first lays down a spinach tortilla then piles on huge scoops of mac and cheese, adds strips of saucy buffalo chicken, trickles bits of bacon all over the cheesy piles and tops it off with a house-made buffalo ranch sauce. Charlie then wraps it nice and tightly and into the fryer it goes.

Once deep fried, he cuts it in half, pours more buffalo ranch sauce on the open ends and covers them with handfuls of crushed Hot Cheetos.

This chimichanga is a must-try when roaming around for food at the LA County Fair!

Charlie said the most satisfying part of running his stands are the reactions he gets from each one of his guests.

“It’s the best feeling ever when you know you did something to make that person stop and say ‘wow!’,” Charlie said. “The LA County Fair is one of my favorite places on Earth and I look forward to the amazing weather and my fryers cooking all the delicious food people will be enjoying all month long.”

Charlie finished by saying to all you foodies out there, come ready and come HUNGRY!

  1. Are there going to be vegan/plant based options at the fair this year? I enjoy going every year and was saddened to find near to nothing available last year :,( I would love to see more plant based options!! 🙂

    • Hi! There are a few places who offer vegetarian options on their menus but as of right now we do not have any all-vegan vendors. We are working on bringing a diverse menu for everyone to enjoy! More information to come on food as the Fair gets closer!

      • I hope there will be all vegan vendors – especially with the vegan boom options this year (even fast food like Del Taco, Carl’s Jr., etc.). It really is the year of the vegan and it would attract many more consumers to the fair that would otherwise not attend because of the lack of food options. Thanks for the reply! I look forward to reading more of your blog as we get closer to the fair opening – and I’m crossing my fingers that I will read about vegan options at the fair article 🙂

  2. Is there still a Indian Fry Bread kitchen in the Fair???
