Big J's Spare Ribs wins Grand Prize for Best BBQ Contest

Best BBQ Grand Prize winner Jason Ward

Saying he felt “just like the Lakers with this repeat,” Jason Ward of San Bernardino took home the Grand Prize for Best BBQ for the second year in a row at the L.A. County Fair.
His recipe for Big J’s Spare Ribs won not only a 1st place ribbon and a $100 check for the Pork Class of the competition, but also a $300 check for winning Grand Prize. Judges also evaluated overall table themes of the competitors and Ward’s ironically paid tribute to another L.A. team – the Dodgers.
Placing second in the Pork Class to Ward was Dan S. Kamps of Chino Hills with his Big Boy B.B.Q Triple Pepper Pulled Pork Butt recipe. Jerry L. Perser of Winnetka was 3rd prize winner with his Baby Back Ribs.
For Best BBQ – Fish, Robin L. Littlefield of South Pasadena won 1st prize for Maple/Rosemary Glazed Salmon (she also won a Culinary Styles contest in 2009). Kristine Burns of Las Vegas placed 2nd with her Kris’ Fish Rub recipe.
For Best BBQ – Beef , 1st prize went to Bud Harte of Claremont for his Smoked Tri-Tip recipe. Another 2009 winner was Scott T. Cushman of Orange who placed 2nd for his Scott’s Gourmet Burgers with Carmerlized Onions. Joe Santana of Mar Vista (another winner in 2009) won 3rd prize for his Pineapple Meatloaf.
Best BBQ – Poultry Class were Marissa L. Sitz of Covina, 1st prize for her Marissa’s Monterey Grilled Chicken; Lynessa Allen of Alta Loma, 2nd prize for her Stuffed Turkey Breast Tenderloin; and Alfred Mora of Pomona, 3rd prize for his Sassy BBQ Chicken.
