Great Opening Weekend

September 9, 2008

The Fair is closed today, as it is every Monday and Tuesday of our run, but we had a great opening weekend – a precursor of things to come? We hope so. The weather is supposed to be cooler this week, so it’s a great time to visit the L.A. County Fair.
Today, if you are reading this early, there is still time to be a Lifesaving Hero and donate blood at the American Red Cross’ blood drive at the Sheraton Fairplex. Those who donate today receive a ticket to come back to the Fair tomorrow – for free! If you can’t make it tomorrow, you’ll receive a $2 discount on any future visit. The ARC blood drive continues to 5 p.m. today.
There is so much coming up this week at the Fair. Tomorrow at 1:45 p.m. at the Pepper Street Stage is the Senior Ballroom dance competition – tons of fun. George Geary, Culinary Styles coordinator and chef extraordinaire, hosts his cheesecake competition at 7 p.m. The cities of Chino, Montclair, Ontario and Upland will celebrate Community Days all day, with a parade at 5:30 p.m. and Community Hero celebrations at 6 p.m. in the Stage at Park Square.
There are a ton of discounts. Wednesdays are Senior Days, with ages 60-plus getting in for $7. This Wednesday, Sept. 10, is also a Day for Heroes, with active military, reserves police, fire and paramedics with ID, along with one guest, getting in for $1, which will be donated to the Red Cross. Every Wednesday and Thursday it’s $5 after 5 p.m. (Thursdays are also College Thursdays with college students with ID getting in for $5). Lots of discounts!!!
Don’t miss the Cavalcade of Horses show in the horse arena, the Millard Sheets Center for the Arts and its exhibit on horses, the volcano at the Flower & Garden Pavilion, shopping, food. Ah! There is so much! You have to keep coming back!
