The LA County Fair introduced its first official Pride event and weekend Sept. 6 at the Pop Stage near Yellow Gate.
“I think its nice to see more inclusive programs at such huge events like this because I only ever see these out near Palm Springs or in LA,” first time fairgoer Harmony Haze said. “I hope people take away that I am not different that they are and that people who are queer or part of this community should not be feared.”
Proud at the Fair featured entertainment all weekend on the Pop Stage, including a drag show from Ru Paul’s Drag race, and a small vendor fair where LGBTQ organizations handed information about supportive groups and safe spaces, and sold pride gear.
“We’re out here to have fun, meet new people and bond with the community,” West Hollywood Cheerleaders spoke Kurt Samborski. The West Hollywood Cheerleaders are a non profit organization who advocate for the end of HIV. “I think it’s amazing that the LA County Fair is doing this event this year because it shows the progress that we are all making and we’re excited to be a part of the first year.”
Veteran and new organizations from near and far made it out to Proud at the Fair to make sure that all in attendance knew they had somewhere they could for support no matter where they lived.
“We just got our non profit status in July and are excited to see the opening of our center in October,” Founder and President of Pomona Pride Center Frank Guzman said. “This weekend shows that Fairplex is making a bold statement that everyone is welcomed here and we look forward to seeing this partnership grow with this event.”
Although we celebrate the first official pride event in our 97th year as a Fair, it will not be our last.
