Dino Roar

I was walking the grounds this morning when I stumbled upon (or rather, it nearly stomped on me) this giant T. Rex standing outside the Jurassic Planet attraction. The Lizard King, as he is known, has “broken” out of building 8 and is trying to escape. You won’t want to miss this fella when you visit the Fair. He is moving and roaring already. I took a little video of him talking to Kristy Jo and me:

Nine days til the Fair my friends!

70 Days ‘Til Pure.Fun.

blue-logo-with-datesHoly cow! Does the counter on the L.A. County Fair website really say 70 days until the Fair?! Yes, it does. That’s only 1,680 hours away (actually, about 1,677). And have we got a show in store for you! We are so excited about the new attractions, Fair favorites (Hot Dog on a Stick! I haven’t had one since last year’s Fair), the carnival and especially our new layout! Our grounds have received an extreme makeover and we can’t wait for you to see it.

All the elements you love about the Fair will still be here. We moved the carnival closer to the center of the Fair and shifted all the shopping to a centralized location in the buildings and the adjoining tree-lined streets. Yellow gate (the one closest to the carnival) will move in a little closer and a special shuttle will jet (well, if you can “jet” at 5 mph) shopping-crazed guests to the shopping area. Basically, we are just moving things in a bit for easier navigation for our guests.

On the attrajurassicctions side we have knights and castles in America’s Kids, a whole new Pirate show in A Pirate’s Life, dinosaurs are roaming the Fair once more in Jurassic Planet (but this time they are ANGRY and they want out!) and Western Days and Rodeo Nights in FairView Farms.

The End of Summer Concert Series will rock your socks off. Acts will be announced July 12.

There are a ton of discounts, we have a wonderfully priced season pass. Drop by and see me, the Fair-ey Blogster. Whatever you do, do not miss the 2010 L.A. County Fair!! It is totally Pure.Fun.

T-Rex Walks Among Us

It looks like a T-Rex, it walks like a T-Rex, it roars like a T-Rex – as least, as far as I know. The Los Angeles County Natural History Museum brought its very life-like baby T-Rex puppet to the Fair today to visit Jurassic Planet. Fairguests were mesmerized (some a little too much – I heard some screaming). Take a look:

Pretty cool, huh? The Natural History Museum conducts presentations with the T-Rex and a baby Triceratops Wednesdays through Sundays at the museum. The T-Rex will be back at the Fair on Oct. 3. Don’t miss it!

Baby T-Rex Roams the L.A. County Fair

T-Rex hatchlingYes, folks. Thanks to some advanced puppetry from the folks at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, young Fairguests visiting JT-Rex Roams the Fairurassic Planet in Building 8 at the L.A. County Fair got to see what a dinosaur hatchling would look like and then what it would be like to meet that hatchling in person a few months later. With a ferocious mien and rather awesome yellow teeth, the Baby T-Rex snorted, growled, sniffed several young Fairguests and then took a short nap.trex_closeup_resized If you missed his special appearance today, don’t worry. He’ll be back Wednesday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 3 for another visit.

Dinosaurily Speaking

trexI trekked out to the land that time forgot this morning, also known as Fairplex 8, aka Jurassic Planet. Exhibits designer Michael Converse, our resident dino expert and artist extraordinaire, has done a fantastic job of planning the exhibit. Kids, and adults alike, are going to be thrilled. check out the videos below, which will give you an idea of what to expect with the animatronic dinosaurs. Theatrical lighting and a soundtrack will enhance Fair visitors’ experience:

Above was a T-Rex and Torosaurus. Check out this one:

I’ll see you, all my paleontological friends, at Jurassic Planet. Better hide your Kettle Korn; I heard Kentrosaurus loves Kettle Korn!

Fred Flintstone Would Love This

ribsJust heard we’ve added Dino Ribs to the Fair Food menu. Of course, the minute I heard, I thought of that Bedrock carhop ploppin’ a slab of ginormous ribs on the side of the Flintstones car. Yabba dabba yummy!

The L.A. County Fair Dino (pronounced Dy-no) Ribs are big, juicy beef ribs, with one rib being over a foot long. Wow! that could feed Fred, Wilma, porkribsPebbles and Dino (pronounced Deeno). Oh yeah, and their sabertoothed cat, too.

This all fits in perfectly with our Jurassic Planet exhibit! We are taking the Fair back in time with prehistoric-sized fun and food.

75 Days and Counting…

See full size imageI am not kidding you! There are only 75 days left until opening day of the 2009 L.A. County Fair! What happened to spring? It was just here. This past Sunday was the official start of summer, and you know what that means here on the grounds of Fairplex. It’s go time! So, in honor of this being the 75th day and counting, I begin my countdown list of what we have to look forward to as the L.A. County Fair gets closer, 75 days closer. That’s 70, plus 5 more. That’s 76 trombones, minus one. That would be a diamond anniversary if we had been married for 75 years (75 years of marriage(!) – better be more than one diamond! Sorry, I digress). OK, here is a short list:

- Hot Dog on a Stick (what? you expected me to start with cute, cuddly animals? Hello! Did you forget who is writing this?)

- Cute, cuddly animals: ok, if you can recall, right behind Hot Dog on a Stick, I love, love, love all the animals we have during Fair, whether it’s the cute puppies at Bark Park or the soft, beautiful rabbits. I even love the huge rodent capybara.

- Big animals: Watusi cattle and their massive horns.

- Dinosaurrrrrrrs! I am so excited about Jurassic Planet, one of our new exhibits. It is all things paleo! We’ll have a T. Rex, Apatosaurus and a Muttaburrasaurus, which some smart-alecky 10-year-old mega genius pointed out that I was pronouncing wrong. Saw-ree!

- Food, fabulous food: besides HDOS, everything ooey, gooey, sticky, fried, frosted, toasted and deelish! This is one time when battered is a good thing.

- End of Summer Concert Series: holy cow! I cannot tell you what the lineup is, but you are gonna be so excited!

Ok, that is just a few. Things are heatin’ up here, so stay tuned! Don’t forget to follow the Fair on Twitter!! And Facebook!

Bigger and Better in ’09

Happy New Year L.A. County Fair fans! The Fair-ey Blogster and everyone at the Fair wishes you a happy, healthy 2009 – and we can’t wait to see you in September! We have so much in store for you – food, fun and some of the most exciting entertainment in Southern California. You will not be disappointed at this year’s Fair!

September sounds like a long way off, but it’s like a blink of the eye to us as we prepare new attractions, design new exhibits and plan a ton of fun. Keep checking Hot Blog on a Stick as I’ll be posting updated information on a more regular basis about attractions, contests and everything else Fair related.

If you don’t recall, our dates are expanding this year. We will open on Labor Day Weekend. Opening day is Saturday, Sept. 5, and we will remain open through Labor Day. Then we will return to our regular Wednesday through Sunday format, Sept. 9 through Oct. 4 (closed Mondays and Tuesdays after Sept. 9).

Just to whet your appetite, I want to let you know of one of our attractions, one of gigantic proportions. What huge, threatening predator is an ancestor of the lovely little birds we see singing outside our windows? Ever wonder what it would be like to walk amongst beasts as large as three-story buildings or with such long necks they could eat leaves off the tops of the tallest trees? OK, you’ve probably already guessed it. Yep, we will be featuring dinosaurs at the Fair!! Jurassic Planet will quench the thirst of all dinosaur fans, and create some new ones I’m sure. More about this later.

So, return to the blog often to see how the nation’s largest county fair comes to life!
