2017 LA County Fair: The 100-Year Countdown

This year marks our 95th anniversary, a.k.a. the start of our 100-year countdown! From what we’ve heard, this will be our funnest Fair yet — from giant dragons to micro pigs, and cricket tacos to Nutella funnel cake. Keep reading for a preview of what we’re making for you this year!

This year we’re all about tradition. We’re bringing enough farm animals, blue ribbon competitions and experiences to last a lifetime. Some highlights to look forward to:

  • Blue Ribbon Contests: Blow the biggest bubblegum bubble, whip up Grandma’s famous apple pie, or show off your tamale making skills — we’re bringing back the old-school Fair contests and the blue ribbon prizes to go with em’. From the home arts competitions in the DIY Design Studio to the spur-of-the-moment contests near Yellow Gate, guests will find plenty to watch (or compete in themselves!)
  • The Magical World of Dragons, Wizards and Beasts: If you’re a Game of Thrones fan or a Harry Potter fanatic, this is the place for you. We’re building a gothic castle filled with knights, wizards, beasts and all sorts of adventures. Details to come!
  • Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA: We’re partnering with the Getty Foundation for their ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles. The Millard Sheets Art Center, along with more than 60 other museums and art galleries in Southern California, will be joining this project. Fair guests will be the first to see our art gallery’s PST exhibit, which will run through January 2018.
  • All the animals: Stanley the Giraffe is back! Our pigs, sheep, horses, goats and exotic animals are back! Our dinosaurs are back! And joining our 500+ friends in our menagerie… The Little Red Barn :) We’re bringing in miniature horses, micro pigs, Dexter cows, Babydoll sheep and Pygmy goats (the ones you’ve been seeing doing yoga on Facebook).
  • Bugs: The Bug Barn takes “Dare to Fair” to the next level. Chef Cricket’s Culinary Kitchen & Bug Tasting Bar is serving up the aforementioned cricket tacos, along with bamboo worms, salted grasshoppers, chocolate beetles and other insect-filled fare. Great for protein, jury is still out on taste.
  • Fair Fare: Giant clouds of cotton candy and enormous ribs on sticks will be back, but we’re also introducing new crazes: Nutella funnel cake, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Cheese Fries and Pickle Cheese to name a few! Just what do these foods look and taste like? Check back with us in September and we’ll let you know!

These are just a few of the things we have planned for the 2017 Fair. We haven’t even started on the new carnival rides, Flower & Garden Pavilion, or our End of Summer Concert Series.

Check back here often during the summer — we’ll be posting updates as soon as we get them!

Dare To Care: American Red Cross

Today we had the pleasure of donating $12,625 to the American Red Cross, San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter! The ARC was the recipient of proceeds from our Week For Heroes.

american red cross la county fair

The American Red Cross and LA County Fair teams pose for the presenting of the check (October 17, 2016)

Our Week For Heroes honors military and law enforcement with special admission, a portion of which goes to  ARC for general relief services. It was an honor to partner with them, alongside our Week for Heroes guests this year at the Fair.

In addition to this partnership, as also worked with ARC for blood drives throughout the Fair. A total of 1,765 pints were collected during these Fair drives.

Neither of these donation partnerships would have been possible without you — our guests. We would like to take this time to thank not only the American Red Cross for being our partner again this year, but all our Week For Heroes guests and Fair blood donors.

Dare to care!

Nothin’ Like The Great Outdoors!

While the carnival rides & games, farm animals and deep-fried food take center stage with Fair fans, America’s Great Outdoors is one of the many exhibits unique to the LA County Fair.

Here, guests can escape from the colorful chaos of the rest of the Fair and take a step into the wilderness. Meet with foresters and rangers at The Ranger Station, learn how they preserve, protect and manage our public lands, like our beautiful national parks.

Check out the native reptiles of Southern California, like our state reptile – the desert tortoise, and become familiar with our state’s native plants.

Camp Smokey is ran by none other than Smokey the Bear, who teaches our Fair guests about the importance of fire safety, with the help of his friends: Woodsy Owl, Mojave Maxine and Seymour Antelope.

Learn all about the history of the Westward Movement at our Yesterday and Today exhibit — from the native people of California, to the struggles and triumphs of the mountain men, and even meet two of America’s living legends: a wild horse and burro.

In addition to all of these, we also have a special National Parks Museum paying tribute to our National Parks Service as they celebrate their centennial birthday.

There’s so much to explore at the Fair this year, and just a few days left to do it. Visit lacountyfair.com for tickets, special offers and to see more of what we have to offer this year!

Cheers to our Wine Education Classes on this #ThirstyThursday

One way to relax at the Fair is to participate in our wine education program. Top chefs and wine experts share their knowledge with Fairgoers, providing wine, crackers and cheese for all – as long as you are 21+.

Last week, Sharron McCarthy joined us at the Wine, Beer & Spirits Marketplace for a class in which she shared her best tips for successful hospitality, hosting parties and of course, the best Chilean wine.

Sharron’s “Charming Chile” class served six different wines (made in different parts of Chile), as well as four delicious cheeses.

The Wines
Natura Sauvignon Blanc
- Color: Transparent yellow
- Taste: Citrus and herb notes reappear on the palate. A fresh, bright and pleasing wine with nicely balanced acidity and good persistence
- 100% Sauvignon Blanc
- Pairs well with ceviche, sushi, smoked ham, goat cheese and salads

Signos De Origen La Vinilla
- Color: Golden yellow
- Taste: Lush and full on the palate with tropical fruit flavors and pleasing acidity
- 68% Chardonnay, 13% Roussanne, 12% Viognier, 7% Marsanne

Signos De Origen Syrah 2012
- Color: Deep purplish-red
- Taste: Beautiful fruit and voluptuous texture complememted by well-balanced acidity and overall tremendous structure.
- 97% Syrah, 3% Viognier

Concha y Toro Gran Reserva Serie Ribera
- Color: Deep Red
- Taste: Well structured, with concentrated flavors of red fruit and sweet tannins.
- 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Carmenere
- Pairs well with beef and pork dishes, and ripe cheeses.

Concha y Toro Marqués de Casa Concha
- Color: Dark ruby red
- Taste: Concentrated flavors are revealed in firm tannins with a soft, silky texture and a lingering finish
- 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Syrah, 1% Petit Verdot
- Pairs well with red meats, cheeses, and hearty pasta dishes.

Coyam
- Color: Intense violet-red
- Taste: Beautifully balanced and full on the palate, good structure with osft, round tannins. Elegant expressions of fruit delicately interwoven with oak, mineral, and toffee.
- 41% Syrah, 29% Carmenere, 20% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Mourvedre, 1% Petit Verdot
- Pairs well with roasted red meats, strong cheeses, and pasta with spicy sauces. Also marries well with dried fruits.

All six wines had unique traits. Sharron had Fairguests see for themselves through scent, color and of course, taste. If you would like a chance to learn more about wine, cheese and olive oil, be sure to stop by!

You can get the full schedule and list of speakers here.

Mojo’s Wild & Crazy Lagoon + GIVEAWAY [CONTEST CLOSED]

If you’ve been following us on social media, you know that Stanley the Giraffe is one of our newest friends to join us here at the Fair. He, along with the rest of his friends, has made Mojo’s Wild & Crazy Lagoon one of our favorite exhibits!

mojos Upon entering from the carnival side, guests will immediately be drawn to Fiona’s Jungle Perch where a colorful mix of macaws, parrots and cockatoos happily reside, chattering with each other and our guests.

Their neighbors at Lemur Lair are always fun to visit. These Madagascar natives always seem relaxed and calm, no matter how noisy their feathered neighbors get.

Of course, the real attraction is just beyond, in The Grasslands. Here, guests will find themselves face to face with Stanley and our zebras, Barcode and Stripes. Did you know you can feed Stanley?

stanley the giraffe

And Mojo the Capuchin Monkey rules over all from her post on Monkey Island, where she spends all day swinging from ropes, hanging from the top of her house and giving shows every day of the Fair.

Keep walking and you’ll encounter the scaly, slithery and slimy at Spike’s Reptile Territory, and any number of spiders, centipedes and other insects at Iggy’s Insect Encounter.

Mojo's crew is always happy to answer questions!

And last, but certainly not least, is the Enchanted Village where guests can see a Capybara, Coatimundi, Hairy Armadillo, Binturong, African Crested Porcupine, hedgehogs and a wallaby!

We  recommend checking Mojo’s Lagoon out twice: once before and after sunset.

You can see the animals best during the day, but at night, our whole exhibit comes to life as our nocturnal creatures become more active, Zor the Firedancer performs, and our Lagoon lights up with color.

And now it’s time for a Mojo’s Lagoon Giveaway!

Mojo’s Lagoon Giveaway
