We miss you!

It’s hard to believe it’s already been TWO months since the Fair ended. We miss the animals, the food, the rides, the loud music but most of all we miss you! Our fans, guests, blog readers/commentators. You are, after all, the reason we pull out all the stops and make the Fair happen every year :)

While 2013 is awhile away, our gates are still open. It might not be the carnival-tastic extravaganza the Fair was but we have some pretty cool events anyway (you know, Color Runs, NHRA finals, Oktoberfest… those kind of things). If you miss us as much as we miss you, check out the Fairplex official blog! We love to write there too :)

Until 2013 everyone!

-A Fair To Remember

Mojo has mastered the “Om Nom” Face

"OM NOM NOM"

Mojo’s African Safari is an exciting trek that leads to encounters with wallabys, an armadillo, macaws and many, many other exotic creatures! First, say hello to Barcode and Stripes, the Fair’s resident zebras before heading up into Safari Village where Mojo Jojo, the Weeper Capuchin monkey is hanging out with Karla, the head safari guide. Mojo is always happy to come out and say hello to guests (not to mention eat a few treats!) Today, Brutus the hedgehog came by to say hello too.

Did you know that hedgehogs have the ability to completely curl in on themselves? It is a form of protection. When a hedgehog feels threatened, it will tuck its head into its belly and roll itself into a tight ball with all their spikes protruding out! Any predator that tries to take a bite of that is in for a nasty and uncomfortable surprise!

"I just LOOK fluffy."

After saying good bye to Mojo, Karla and Brutus, take a quick peek into the rest of the Safari Village. The droll capybara, prickly African spiked porcupine and the cute little wallabys are just some of the animals you can visit here. Check out one of our friends:

The prehensile tailed porcupine comes from Southern Panama. He looks very sleepy in this picture, doesn’t he? This porcupine lives off of leaves, fruits and stems. He depends on his tail for stability. You can’t tell but he is using it for balance in this picture! The tail is 9% of his total body weight and are used for grasping.

Next up is Iggy’s Insect Encounter and Spike’s Reptile Territory. If you’re brave enough to handle it, take a look at some scorpions, tarantulas, snakes and all sorts of icky, gooey cool creatures. Or, if you’re a little more squeamish (like me) head on over to Fiona’s Perch! This is one of my favorite spots in our little journey. The birds are extremely colorful and very fun to look at.  There are exotic birds of every kind, from brilliantly plumed macaws to the more camouflaged kookaburras. There’s plenty to learn and even more to see!

I love visiting the Big Red Barn and it’s always fun to relax around Stingray Island but I have discovered that Mojo’s African Safari is more than enough adventure!

Meanwhile in America’s Kids

Thor came to visit A Living Library of Fun and took a pose with some of the other “Avengers.” My personal favorite superhero is Iron Man, but Thor comes in a close second.

Thor

America’s Kids celebrates the innovation and imaginations of kids in many ways. One of the best parts of the exhibit is the way children’s talents are showcased. Photography, science projects, paintings, homemade quilts and clothing, Lego creations and many more are featured throughout the duration of the Fair. Check out the photos below of some of our award-winning kids.

GoPros Are Friends, Not Food

Yesterday our amazing little GoPro camera took a dive into the pool over at Stingray Island! We got to see a whole new point of view to the exhibit which was fun, although some of our sea creature friends had to be reminded, “GoPros are friends, not food!” Check out the footage below:

WINNER! Daily Giveaway #2: Iron Man

We have our second winner! Congratulations to Arturo Serna!!! We hope you enjoy your day at the Fair.

He correctly answered that the Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Thor are the superheroes featured in The Avengers. Many of you also gave a shout-out to Nick Fury and we agree that he definitely deserves a special mention!

Thank you again to everyone who participated. Check back here later today for our third daily giveaway–and yes, it’s still the complete prize pack of tickets, ride passes, food bucks and blog tees :)

It’s Day 2 of our Daily Giveaway! Just like yesterday, we are giving away two Fair passes, two ride passes, food bucks and two Hot Blog On A Stick tees to one lucky winner.

Iron Man visited the Fair today, in full costume! Iron Man a.k.a. Tony Stark is, in his own words, a “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” (The Avengers, 2012). Not to mention a super cool, high-flying, heavy-lifting, brave superhero! He was kind enough to spend some time taking pictures with fans today:

Iron Man and some excited fans

After saying hi to Iron Man I decided this next contest should definitely be an Avengers based one. So here’s the question:

Can you name all the superheroes featured in this year’s blockbuster smash, The Avengers?

Name them all in the comment box and we will select our next winner (at random) tomorrow! The contest is open until 11:59 p.m. (PST) TONIGHT and the winner will be selected tomorrow afternoon!

Best of luck!

Enjoy a trip to the Fair… On us!

Here we go!

If it looks like a stingray but moves like a crab…

Stingray Island is loaded with creatures of the sea–stingrays (of course), eels, a lion fish, sharks and the Horseshoe Crab.

This little guy–well, he’s not so little–looks like his neighbor stingrays but he’s actually a crab!

Is it a stingray or a crab?

Is it a stingray or a crab?

At first glance he appears to be a member of the sand ray family but if you lift him onto his back you’ll see that he’s actually a crab! Horseshoe Crabs can be identified by their hard, disc-shaped shells and their large eyes. When you flip him over, you can see that although his shell resembles a stingray, his underside says otherwise.

They have five pairs of legs they use for walking, swimming and feeding. You can see him crawling along the bottom of the stingray pool, searching for food!
