2017 High School Marching Band Competition Results

Each year a number of high school marching bands participate in our daily parades. They aren’t just performing, they’re actually competing for a cash prize which is awarded on the last Friday of the Fair.

This year’s winners are:

1st Place: Diamond Bar High School
2nd Place: Glendora High School
3rd Place: Upland High School

Each band wins between $2,500 – $10,000 in cash, which goes back towards their department. Congratulations to our winning bands and thank you to all the schools who participated this year!

The marching band competition is one of our favorite Fair traditions and we look forward to it every year.

Blue Ribbons Galore at the DIY Design Studio

Looking for old-school Fair fun? Look no further than the DIY Design Studio, home to dozens of competitions. From photography to knitting to baking, this is the place where our most creative guests can show off their talents (and compete for a coveted blue ribbon!)

la county fair home arts Many competition entries are submitted beforehand; participants don’t know who won until they walk through our doors and see their work on display (a long-time Fair tradition!)

No matter how many times we’ve walked through the DIY Design Studio, we’re always impressed with the level of care participants put into their projects.

Minor details — the smallest rose on a cake, the finishing touch on a tablescaping piece, the perfect color on a crotchet blanket — are distinct reminders that the home arts are truly alive and well in our community.

In addition to the entries that have already been judged, new blue ribbons are being awarded every single day in our live culinary competitions!

Iron Chef and Chopped-like competitions, where guests have to create dishes on the spot with a secret (Fair-themed) ingredient, and traditional contests like the grilled cheese and salsa competitions are held on a weekly basis.

The first, second and third place winners have their picture taken and placed on our board in the competitions arena (pictured in the photo above).

“This world is but a canvas for our imagination”
– Henry David Thoreau

With America’s Kids’ Adventures in Literature you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into an enchanted library where giant books, costumed characters and hands-on activities come together to create a literary adventure of your own.

At America’s Kids, you’ll see thousands of entries from talented students ages 3-18.  From coloring page contests to collections to dioramas, students have worked hard on these projects and earned ribbons to prove it!

Scavenger Hunt Weekend 2 Recap!

We wrapped up the last of our scavenger hunts this past weekend. We had a blast driving around LA County, from Grand Park in DTLA all the way back to our stomping grounds: Fairplex.

la county fair scavenger hunts More than 200 of you showed up for our final scavenger hunt! These are just the first few :)

It was great to meet so many fans from so many parts of Los Angeles: mid-city, Pasadena, Alhambra, Fontana, Pomona, downtown LA and many other neighborhoods.

We’re all about tradition at the Fair, from blue-ribbon contests to must-eat food favorites. It looks like our annual social media scavenger hunts will be joining the ranks of other LA County Fair must-dos.

Our scavenger hunts are played by Fair fans of all ages. It’s a great excuse to get out of the house, explore Los Angeles and maybe even win a few Fair tickets while you’re at it. As for us, we love meeting our fans in person, and getting everyone excited to Dare to Fair!

Thank you again to everyone who played along with us over the past two weekends. We truly had a great time and we hope you did too. See you in September!

2017 Fair Scavenger Hunts Are Here!

Our Fair Scavenger Hunts are BACK, Dare to Fair style! Follow photo clues to find our social media team throughout LA & the IE and win Fair admission, ride passes, and Dare to Fair swag!

HOW IT WORKS:

The LA County Fair social media team will be hanging out in the LA/IE with Fair admission, ride passes, and swag, just for you!

We’ll be posting photo clues on Instagram Stories or Snapchat (one channel per hunt) to guide you to each location. You can also find these clues on the Facebook Event page.

No more than two Fair scavenger hunt locations will be active per day: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. LIKE our Facebook page and visit the Scavenger Hunt Event Page for updates and clue details.

SCAVENGER HUNT DATES:

  • Saturday, Aug. 12 (Instagram)

  • Sunday, Aug. 13 (Snapchat)

  • Saturday, Aug. 19 (Snapchat)

  • Sunday, Aug. 20 (Instagram)

THE RULES:

It can’t be a game without rules, right? It’s pretty simple:

1. Follow us on our social media channels for clues. Each clue will lead you closer to the location of the prize. We will be posting all of our clues on our Instagram Stories (@lacountyfair) or Snapchat (lacountyfair) depending on the day, but you can follow along on Twitter (@lacountyfair). Track clues and document your journey using the hashtag #DareToFair.

2. Get moving! Each clue leads you closer to the prize destination, getting more specific with each new photo.

3. Find our team (we’ll be in full Fair gear) and collect your prize! Remember, it’s first come, first serve. We’ll be posting a ‘secret’ password on the third clue that you’ll need to say to prove you’ve been playing. You will also need to show us a screenshot of the third clue.

Once you collect your prize, it’s yours to keep. Don’t forget to share your win on social media using #DareToFair!

REMINDERS:

1. After all the prizes have been handed out (or an hour has passed since the final clue has been posted), the hunt is officially over for that location. We will post an announcement on the Facebook Event Page once the prizes have been passed out. There are approximately 30 prizes per hunt.

2. You do NOT have to physically drive to each clue location – only the location of the third clue.  Our first two clues help you head in the right direction, so you can find us :)

3. You must say the password, which will be revealed in the third clue, in order to get a prize. We also ask that you show us a screenshot of the third clue, to make sure we don’t have any random passersby taking your prize unfairly :)

4. All locations have been decided prior to the hunt beginning. We have selected a variety of locations throughout the Inland Empire and LA County.

5. Remember, prizes are given out on a first come, first serve basis. Good luck to all!

Happy hunting!

America’s Kids & The Land of Frogs, Princesses and Knights: The Whimsical Side of the Fair

Dare to imagine in Expo Hall 5! Enter the Land of Frogs, Princesses & Knights, where the adventures are non-stop, from the brave and daring acts of the Knight School, to the fun and fancy antics of Wonderland.

Also in Expo Hall 5 is America’s Kids. This world is full of nostalgia, enchantment and wonder for guests of all ages. Children will see some of their favorite stories come to life while parents will get a tad nostalgic seeing some of their classics up close and personal.

Earlier this year we took you behind-the-scenes of this exhibit. Thousands of local children submitted creative projects to be displayed during the Fair.

When we last checked in, all the entries were spread on long tables, shelves and various storage spaces. Fast forward to September and our hard-working team has given out ribbons, awards and hung every submission out for our guests to see.

Play games, dress up, and open your imagination at one of our most creative exhibits at the Fair!
