A Traveling Wine Tasting Event

three_wine_glasses_resizedThis is one of the most fun wine tasting events at McKinley’s Grille at Sheraton Fairplex hotel. It’s a progressive party that starts on the McKinley’s Grille patio and moves to the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum and the famous but little seen Fairplex Wine Cellar, which is mission central for the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits and Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competitions.

The tastings for this event are award winners from this year’s competition (3,400 entries from around the globe). It’s a great way to try out some of these wines without making a commitment to a whole bottle.

It’s an affordable $25 per person and it includes many tastings and some great food go-withs from the McKinley’s Grille executive chef, David Teig. Unless you’re a really big eater, there’s plenty of food (and wine!) for a light summer supper.

Hip Hop Joins the Line-Up at Tattoo & Body Art Expo

tattooexpoOk, there’s no question that body art and tattoos aren’t for everyone. But truly, look around. This phenomenon is no longer the exclusive domain of bikers. Just ask any college kid you know. If their parents aren’t around, many of them will probably have at least one “tat” to show you.

According to a 2008 Harris poll, 14% of the population has at least one tattoo. One-third (32%) of ages 25-29 and one-quarter (25%) of ages 30-39 have tattoos. Men (15%) are slightly more likely to have a tattoo than women (13% ).  Compared to people without tattoos, partictattoogirl_resizedipants in the poll think people with tattoos are less intelligent (27%) and more sexy (39%). If you’re interested in learning more about this phenom, check out Tattooblog, “Your gateway to the world of Tattoos and skin art.”

If you want to find out for yourself what atll the fuss is about or if you’re ready for your first or next tattoo, Fairplex is definitely the place. The annual Tattoo & Body Art Expo in Fairplex 4 is the largest tattoo expo in the world. About 10,000 people attend the three-day event that starts Friday, July 17 and ends Sunday, July 19 to see and be seen as well as get tats and various body piercings.

Joining the line-up this year, Mack 10, Warren G, and Tattoo from Power 106’s Big Boys Neighborhood will perform Friday and Saturday at the Expo.

There’s also a Miss Body Art Expo Beauty Pageant and a Best of The Day Tattoo Contest at the end of each day of the show.tattoo_expo_resized1

Even if you’re not ready to embrace the tat culture, the people watching is worth the price of admission.

Have a tat? Want a tat? Leave a comment and let us know which side of the ink you fall on, so to speak.

These are some of the coolest fashions going and they’re normally priced accordingly, as in a couple of hundred dollars for a T-shirt. ed_hardy_sneaker_resized1If you’re not familiar with Ed Hardy, you can review the fashions and the prices here. ed_hardy_jeans_resized_edited-2

A trip down memory lane at Grand National Roadster Show

If you’re a car buff with a nostalgic streak for the early days, this is your show. It’s the 60th year of the longest running indoor car show in the world. To commemorate the anniversary of where it all started, at an armory in Oakland, California, GNRS will make time travel possible right here in Pomona.

When the show opens Friday, Jan. 23, Fairplex 9 will look just like those 1950s roadster shows, complete with oil drums lined up to rope off the show cars, ceiling banners announcing the show queen and, of course, vintage cars of that era.

Hundreds of new and old custom-designed roadsters will fill all seven Fairplex exhibit buildings and surrounding grounds. Movie stars, tv actors, rockers, and just plain "roadies" will be here. Don’t miss this.

Friday, Jan. 23 – Sunday, Jan. 25

Friday noon – 9 p.m.
Saturday 10am – 9 p.m.
Sunday 10am – 7 p.m.
