Where is she now? Big Boy No. 4014 Update

Throwing it back a few years… do you remember Big Boy No. 4014?

Fairplex TBT bigboy 1024x468 Where is she now? Big Boy No. 4014 Update Big Boy No. 4014 at Fairplex, getting ready for the big move (2013)

The Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 is one of the largest steam engines in the world, and for 51 years, she called Fairplex home. The RailGiants Train Museum team at Fairplex took excellent care of Big Boy before passing her along to train experts in Cheyenne, WY in 2013.

Fairplex BigBoy 4014badge1 225x300 Where is she now? Big Boy No. 4014 Update The move itself was quite a project — we had to build a mile-long track from the museum to the Metrolink station on Arrow Hwy just to get Big Boy on the road!

4 years and 1,300 miles later, Big Boy is happily situated in her new home in Wyoming, undergoing extensive restoration and repair by the Union Pacific’s Heritage Fleet Operations Team.

One of our faithful Fairplex friends visited Big Boy recently and sent us some pictures to show us how she’s doing. Take a look!

It has been an honor to host this piece of history on our grounds. We’re glad to see her progress so far!

Fairplex Weekend Recap: Bubbles, paint and trains

Bubble Run 5K
Foam, bubbles and soap suds took over Fairplex Saturday morning during the Bubble Run 5K! Fun runs have been a regular occurrence here for several years, but the sight of thousands of guests running — whether through paint, powder, bubbles or beer — never gets old.

Palates & Palettes: Picasso
Our monthly wine & paint night was a blast! Our attendees learned to paint “Woman With A Flower” by Pablo Picasso. Of course, the painting lesson was accompanied by plenty of food and wine from Picasso’s homeland of Spain. All in all, a fantastic way to wrap up our Saturday.

Elsewhere on campus, the RailGiants Train Museum and the Fairplex Garden Railroad hosted their open houses over the weekend. Saturday was National Train Day and the RailGiants crew were out and about, sharing the histories of our historic steam engines with visitors.

Our Fairplex Garden Railroad team also opened their doors for train enthusiasts. The whole crew has been hard at work adding new scenes, refurbishing train tracks and getting ready for the summer.

Fairplex Weekend Recap: Cars, Paint, Wine and Trains

WOW, what a great weekend! The rubber smell is still in the air, and we absolutely love it!

On Saturday and Sunday, we celebrated horsepower and torque at the 2nd annual O’Reilly Auto Parts Street Machine & Muscle Car Nationals.

Our grounds were filled with high-performance muscle cars, pro-touring cars and street machines from across the country. Guests did not only take pictures of the cars, shared car tips and enjoyed the burnout contests, but they also enjoyed live music by Queen Nation and Joshua Tree.

RedCar Fairplex Weekend Recap: Cars, Paint, Wine and TrainsOn Sunday, March 15, we had The Graffiti Run 5K. This fun and colorful event was perfect for athletes and couch potatoes alike. The goals of the event were to drench you in color and for you to have fun with family and friends, not to see who would run the fastest! Being there sure made me feel like jumping up and down, but too bad I was not dressed appropriately. I won’t miss the next one.

On Sunday, Family Winemakers hosted its 16th wine trade and consumer tasting on our grounds. The tasting featured approximately 150 of the state’s unique, small family-owned wineries pouring more than 500 wines. Many of those wines aren’t generally available in the Southern California market, so people definitely took advantage of the opportunity to explore great California wines.

In addition to the cars, wine and amazing colors from the 5K run, the RailGiants Train Museum was open this weekend!

As I walked around, I was taken back to the glory days of the American Railroad. The throwback was really nice since we sometimes forget about the methods of transportation that do not include our vehicles.

The museum is open free of charge to the general public the second Saturday and Sunday of each month. So, there is no reason why you can’t stop by and appreciate the Union Pacific Centennial DD40X diesel-powered locomotive, which measures nearly 100 feet in length, and weighs over a half million pounds.
