Fairplex Weekend Recap: Modern Pentathlon, vintage finds and party planning

We’ve had some time to catch our breath from the whirlwind of events at Fairplex last weekend. ICYMI, here’s what we had the pleasure of hosting:

Modern Pentathlon
We captured some of the mid-week excitement in our previous blog post — here’s the rest of the recap:

The Women’s Finals finished on a high note for Lena Schoeneborn (Germany), who took gold on Saturday. Kate French from Great Britain and Ekaterina Khuraskina from Russia took silver and bronze respectively.

We finished out this international sporting competition with the Mixed Relay (men & women combined) on Sunday afternoon. Congratulations to Korea (1), Japan (2) and Kazakhstan (3) for your wins!

In addition to the traditional Modern Pentathlon World Cup events, our campus also had the opportunity to be the testing ground for a new obstacle laser-run which is planned to be incorporated into the Mixed Relay event in the future.

All in all, this was an incredible experience for us. To host an international event like this was truly an honor and everyone, from our events team to our security staff, played a role in making it happen. You can check out more from the event on social media by searching #UIPMWorldCup.

Junk In The Trunk Vintage Market
We absolutely loved having the Junk In The Trunk event at Fairplex! There were so many unique finds, from rugs to furniture to wall art and more… two days was hardly enough time to check it all out:

Quince Expo
While some were cheering on Pentathletes, and others shopping all things cute and vintage, still others were preparing for parties! The Quince Expo brought color and high energy to Fairplex with the number of vendors and eager shoppers:

In addition to all of this, we also wrapped up the Quilt, Craft & Sewing Festival on Friday and hosted a driving school and public auto auction. What. A. Weekend.

Up next: The Kennel Club of Beverly Hills Dog Show. Our next blog post will summarize some of our biggest March events. Stay tuned!

Modern Pentathlon World Cup #1 (So Far)

Playing host to an international sporting event is something many of us have never experienced before. It’s been a whirlwind of swimming, fencing, horse riding, running and lasers (aka Modern Pentathlon) and it’s not over yet!

Check out some highlights from the Men’s Finals below:

We’re in the middle of the Women’s Finals as we speak. The whole World Cup culminates tomorrow at the Mixed Relay Competition when both men and women will compete in the five Pentathlon sports.

In addition to hosting the fencing, horse riding, running and shooting portions of the Pentathlon, we’ve also created a unique learning experience for field trip groups and spectators!

The Modern Pentathlon Experience allows guests to try some of the sports for themselves, including shooting a laser pistol and learning about the history of Pentathlon. The exhibit opens up to the infield, where you can see the horse riding, running + shooting up close.

Each round of finals ends with the Awards Ceremony, celebrating the 1st – 6th place finalists of the day.

We’re about to go into the final event (laser-run) of the day, and then we’ll end with the Women’s Awards Ceremony at around 7:30 p.m.

We can’t express enough how amazing an opportunity it has been to host this international event. Thank you to all our staff who helped to make this happen, and to the athletes, coaches and UIPM team who have called Fairplex their home for the past few days!

Throwback Thursday: From an Olympian to a General

Fairplex Events Pentathlon georgerunning1 Throwback Thursday: From an Olympian to a General

Photo from WIRED Magazine

General George S. Patton is known for his bravery and leadership in World War II, but before becoming a national hero, he was an Olympic athlete.

Modern Pentathlon was introduced to the Summer Olympic Games in 1912. George Patton was the first and only athlete to compete from the United States.

If you’ve been reading our blog posts, you know that Pentathletes compete in a total of five sports: running, shooting, swimming, fencing and showjumping. And yes, Patton did all five at the Olympic Games. The 26-year-old future general, with only two months to train for the sport, placed fifth overall.

We’ll be inducting Patton into the UIPM Hall of Fame at our Opening Ceremonies next Thursday. It is our privilege to honor him for the amazing athletic feats he accomplished in the first Modern Pentathlon.

Modern Pentathlon: 5 Sports, 1 Event

We’re exactly one week away from Modern Pentathlon World Cup #1 and we couldn’t be more thrilled. It’s not every day that we can say we’re hosting an Olympic experience!

Some of you may be wondering: What’s a Modern Pentathlon? Is it really part of the Olympic games? To answer your questions…

1. What it is: Modern Pentathlon is divided into five disciplines: fencing, swimming, showjumping, running and laser shooting. World-class athletes compete in all five sports in the semi-finals, finals and mixed relay competition. More than 30 countries will be represented at Fairplex.

2. Yes it is an Olympic sport: Modern Pentathlon is the only sport created specifically for the Olympics; it debuted at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm! During the four-year break in between the Olympic Summer Games, events called World Cups are held around the world where top-notch athletes compete against one another for gold, silver and bronze medals. We (Fairplex) are hosting the first World Cup of 2017, here on our grounds, with swimming held at The Claremont Club.

We broke down how each of the five sports works in the infographic below. Check it out!

The infield is currently getting prepped for the Modern Pentathlon, coming to Fairplex Feb. 22-26. It won’t be long before the grass and dirt transforms into the arena for athletes to jump horses, shoot and run. We can’t wait to show you the final product! A before & after pic is definitely in store.

INFOGRAPHIC: Modern Pentathlon History

It may be called ‘modern’ but the event  is more than a century old! Introduced at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, the first Modern Pentathlon event only had one US Olympian, the future Gen. George S. Patton.

Since that first year, athletes have trained hard to become masters of Modern Pentathlon, competing in numerous competitions, from the World Cup events to the Olympic Games.

Walk with us through the history of Modern Pentathlon, from its origins at the 1912 Olympics to its arrival here at Fairplex:

5 Reasons to check out the Modern Pentathlon

“We enrich lives by entertaining and educating our diverse community through unique and memorable experiences.” That is the mission of Fairplex, and we are truly meeting our potential as we prepare to host the 2017 Modern Pentathlon!

While there are many reasons to attend this spectacular international competition, here are five of the reasons we are most excited about bringing this event to Fairplex:

Fairplex Events Pentathlon FBCoverPhoto 1024x341 5 Reasons to check out the Modern Pentathlon

5 Reasons To Check Out the Modern Pentathlon

1. The Olympic Experience: Did you know that the Modern Pentathlon is an Olympic sport? That’s right, several of our Modern Pentathlon athletes competed in the Rio Olympics last year. For many athletes, the World Cup is part of their journey to possibly compete in the 2020 Tokyo games. Fairplex has the honor of hosting the 2017 World Cup — the first of four — which will culminate in the Olympic trials in four years.

2. The Excitement: Pistol shooting. Fencing. Swimming. Horsemanship. Running. Pentathlon founder Baron de Coubertin wasn’t kidding when he said the Modern Pentathlon proves whether competitors are complete athletes — this event is about mental and physical prowess in equal measure. The adventure and action is non-stop, for athletes and spectators alike.

3. The History: 2017 marks the first year the international Modern Pentathlon competition will be in Southern California since the 1984 Olympic games, making this an historic moment not only for Fairplex, but for Southern California residents as well.

4. The Local Sports Community: This event is a big win for local sports fan. Where else, after all, do you get a chance to see an Olympic-class, international competition so close and personal? This is a chance to connect with neighbors who share a love of competitive sports, brush shoulders with world-class athletes, and take part of something that will lead to the 2020 Olympics (and beyond!)

5. The Celebrations: While most eyes are on who wins what, there is plenty of time for celebrations before, during and after the competition. From our Opening Ceremonies to the Modern Pentathlon Experience, there is something for everyone to learn, see and do.

These are just some of the reasons we’re excited about hosting the Modern Pentathlon World Cup. To learn more about this momentous event click here.
