New Sculpture at Fairplex

The Millard Sheets Art Center at Fairplex has a new sculpture! Last Friday, officials unveiled a beautiful bronze sculpture that pays homage to Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta.

Maestro Jose Sacal created and donated this piece of art to Los Angeles County. We are proud to be selected as the location for the sculpture for the next five years.

Come see it for yourself during the LA County Fair, or during a visit to one of our year-round art exhibitions.

Throwback Thursday: #PSTInstaSwap

A couple months ago the Millard Sheets Art Center participated in the #PSTInstaswap. 40 institutions hosting Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA exhibitions swapped locations for a day to explore the art and culture happening outside their own spaces.

Each institution was assigned a specific swap. We swapped with the Riverside Art Museum, who hosted “Myth & Mirage” — an exploration of how Californian architects and designers adapted Spanish Colonial, Mission, ecclesiastical and native elements to create romanticized perceptions of our state.

In exchange, the Riverside Art Museum social team visited the Millard Sheets Art Center to check out our hosted exhibition: “One Path Two Journeys” featuring the artwork of Judithe Hernández and Patssi Valdez — two brilliant, strong artists known for influencing the aesthetic voices of Latinas in the 20th century:

We had a blast doing the #PSTInstaswap! Special thanks to the Riverside Art Museum team for partnering with us.

Explore “One Path Two Journeys” at the Millard Sheets Art Centers, Saturdays & Sundays 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. now through Jan. 28. Admission is FREE! Free parking at Gate 1.

Fairplex Snapshot: Pacific Standard Time LA/LA

Today we had the pleasure of hosting two special guests at Fairplex: Comedian, actor and writer Cheech Marin, and Riverside Art Museum curator Todd Wingate.

If you visited the Fair in September, you might have seen the PST LA/LA One Path Two Journeys exhibit at the Millard Sheets Art Center. This special Chicano art exhibit is part of the larger Pacific Standard Time art initiative throughout Southern California.

Cheech is an avid Chicano art collector, and actually lent us several pieces from his Patssi Valdez collection. It was great to walk with him through the exhibit and to hear his thoughts on the art as a whole.

The Riverside Art Museum is also participating in the Pacific Standard Time LA/LA initiative. We enjoyed connecting with Todd and talking about both of our museums’ experiences in being part of this wonderful project.

Thank you to Cheech and Todd for hanging out! It was a pleasure to meet you both.

Fairplex Snapshot: Art Lessons at Millard Sheets Art Center

Fairplex TLC ceramics 300x300 Fairplex Snapshot: Art Lessons at Millard Sheets Art Center The Millard Sheets Art Center lies in a pretty corner of Fairplex, surrounded by trees and set back from the hustle and bustle of the expo halls and grandstand.

Deceptively small from the front, the art center includes a spacious gallery and several classrooms for pottery, painting, ceramics and other programs. It is in these classrooms that high school students dedicated an entire semester to learning about the fine arts.

Our Career & Technical Education Center (CTEC) art classes focus on creation, research, exhibition and communication of fine art and design, preparing students for continued study and work in college or in the workplace. We’re proud of the progress our students make each semester!

Special education students from local schools made dream catchers for their annual art piece.

Fairplex Events ArtReach gallery3 Sneak peek of ArtReach: The Art of Dreams The Opening Reception & Awards Ceremony will take place Saturday evening, with the gallery opening to the public on Fridays – Sundays in March, noon – 5 p.m. beginning on March 5.

We’re always blown away by the talent and creativity our local high school students have. The thought and effort they put into their pieces — whether a painting, a sculpture, or a photo — is amazing.

It’s always beautiful to see the various interpretations students have of the theme (this year the theme is Dreams), and how they manifest that interpretation into something unique to themselves.
