2016 LA County Fair Recap

Whew! The 2016 LA County Fair was a whirlwind of fun and adventure, which we documented over on our Fair blog, Hot Blog On A Stick.

Now that the smells of deep-fried food have faded, and the carnival rides, animals and guests have left, we’ve finally returned to our blogging efforts over here, and just in time for our fall festivities (more on that later.)

In case you missed it, here are some of our favorite moments from the Fair this year:

What were your favorite moments from the 2016 LA County Fair? Tell us in the comments below!

Behind-the-Scenes: LA County Fair Preparations

This past week has been a busy one for us! Farm animals moving in, food stands getting set up, carnival rides, games and prizes flowing through, not to mention the construction of our new exhibits .. FAIR season is here, and we haven’t seen a quiet day in a long time.

Despite our packed schedule, we’re having a blast seeing the LA County Fair come together. Check out photos below to see how things are going:

We can’t wait to welcome you to our 94th annual Fair! For all information regarding tickets, entertainment, hours and more, visit us at http://lacountyfair.com!

Fairplex Snapshot: The Farm Road

Farming happens 24/7 at The Farm, but during the LA County Fair, we add an extra heap of energy to the normal urban farm life. The Farm Road, for instance, becomes a colorful, dynamic tapestry of Fair treats and entertainment.

Guests can say hello to the Budweiser Clydesdales, take a peek into popular circus acts, indulge their sweet and savory cravings, and take in the view of the Grandstand.

As we get into Fair season (Sept. 2 – 25) head over to the Hot Blog On A Stick to learn about that Farm Fair life: a dude ranch, line dancing, delicious food, shows, animals, tours and more. We can’t wait!

Behind-the-Scenes: Fair Mode

It’s safe to say we’re in full Fair mode over here. Over the next few weeks our campus will slowly but surely transform into the Fairgrounds that 1.3 million guests trek through each year.

We have just begun set-up, but you can already tell it’s going to be an epic year:

The dinosaurs are taking their time migrating over here, but our entrance is almost built and ready to welcome guests in September.

If you walk a little further in, you can see where the cows, pigs, goats, sheep and other animals are going to be too.

Our team has already brought in familiar barn facades, hand-washing stations, and stages for our shows.

Sky Shivers will be driving down in a few weeks with all your Fair favorites, along with a few new friends!

LACF DIY display 1024x768 Behind the Scenes: Fair Mode One of our favorite spots, the DIY Design Studio, has made quite the transformation over the past couple months. Fair guests near and far have submitted their entries for our annual contests (jewelry, quilting, photography etc) and our team is busy putting everything up for display.

It seems like every day there’s something new that’s being built! Stay tuned here and on the official Fair blog to see what’s in store for the 2016 Fair.

Throwback Thursday: LA County Fair Competitions

We’ve been looking through Fair photos of old and we came across this fun one hidden in our archives:

Thank You, John Svenson

Upland sculptor John Svenson passed away this month, but his legacy lives on at Fairplex.

Svenson was actually part of our Fair staff for 26 years as an art consultant, and is the creator of “Ranchero,” the large wood figure standing guard outside the art center since 1953.

Svenson also collaborated with artist Albert Stewart on the creation of “Bull Wall,” the brick relief sculpture featured in the Millard Sheets outdoor patio, still enjoyed by guests every year.

We would like to thank John Svenson for his influence in the art and design of Fairplex, not only at the Millard Sheets Art Center, but throughout our campus. L.A. is lucky to have had such talent as his!

Wedding Decor 101: Inspiration From Our Fair-y Tale Weddings

The flurry of holiday engagement announcements have died down and wedding planning season is officially here. Since the Bride World Expo is at Fairplex this weekend we decided it was time to write a little post on weddings.

A couple years ago we hosted a series of Fair-y Tale Weddings at the LA County Fair. It was hot and it was crowded, but the wedding ceremonies were absolutely beautiful. Here are a few DIY decor tips as you start your own planning:

Tip #1: The decor is in the details
Our first Fair-y Tale Wedding was held on Picnic Hill, so of course we had a picnic theme! We chose the colors and theme before doing any purchasing or other decision making. We made sure every detail matched the color scheme and overall theme of the day, from the miniature picnic basket party favors to the wild flowers in mason jars.

As you begin to choose flowers, table centerpieces, cakes and reception layout, having a color scheme and theme in place will help keep you focused and give you the time and mindset to add those little touches.

Tip #2: A few simple pieces go a long way
Our second wedding was an intimate, summery affair held in the Wedding Gardens at the Sheraton Fairplex Hotel. We didn’t want the decor to be too decadent for this simple ceremony and we were able to put together a very cute, photo-friendly spread as part of the reception.

By adding a few extra touches — real lemons, pendants and crates holding candy jars and treats — we transformed a simple picnic table into a lovely party spread.

Tip #3: Play to the venue itself
Our final wedding took place on The Farm at Fairplex. It only made sense to choose a rustic theme for this happily-ever-after ceremony. We used hay bales for seats, hanging picture frames for photo opps and an endless amount of wildflowers, lace and pastel to accentuate the Farm’s natural setting.

If you’re planning on doing most of the wedding decor yourself, we recommend taking a look at wedding blogs and the mother of all DIY, Pinterest to get started. It is possible to create a fairy tale wedding on a low budget with just a little creativity and know-how!
