Event Industry News: 4th of July celebrations and mishaps, Vine strikes back, Facebook launches Graph Search

incredible motocross stunt 1024x680 Event Industry News: 4th of July celebrations and mishaps, Vine strikes back, Facebook launches Graph Search4th of July in California: KABOOM! was a sold-out, loud and American proud success at Fairplex on the 4th of July. Monster trucks and motocross dominated the evening with flips, jumps and stunts to please the whole crowd. The show ended with a large fireworks spectacular that lit up the sky over Fairplex in red, white and blue.

Unfortunately, not all fireworks shows had the same happy ending. A fireworks malfunction at a Simi Valley show injured at least 28 spectators. Thankfully, no one died despite several serious injuries. The incident started when at least one firecrackers exploded pre-launch in its’ canister, triggering similar errors in other firecracker containers. Investigators are currently analyzing the situation to grasp a full understanding of why things went wrong.

Vine Strikes Back: Despite Instagram’s popular video feature, Vine hasn’t given up just yet. A recent iOS update reveals new features for the second-tier app. Instagram video beats Vine in multiple ways: Filters on the video, longer screen time, a cohesive platform for images and video to live together, an already established user and follower base and last but not least, more compatible with Facebook sharing. Sure Vine might dominate Twitter, but it’s much easier to highlight a video/photo on Facebook than in a constantly flowing tweet stream. Still, Vine rises up with features like a focus button and grid options for shooting, a ghost function–allowing users who create time-stop videos to see exactly where they last left off–and categories as a means to search through photos with specific hashtags and subject matter. As far as Vine is concerned, the battle isn’t over yet, and they aren’t going down without a fight. Photo from pcauthority.com

Social Media: Facebook finally launches Graph Search today. Back in January we mentioned the possibility of Graph Search–the enhanced searched tool for Facebook–and now that idea has finally come to fruition.  The social media powerhouse plans to roll out the graph search to a number of users today.

In a nod to the alien hoo-ha, Google has created a fun and short animated game on their homepage, during which Google users help an alien rebuild his ship so he can return home.

Happy Independence Day!

Fairplex  would like to wish you and your loved ones a very Happy Independence Day!

L.A. Weekender: 4th of July Edition

It’s Wednesday! No such thing as a mid-week slump when Independence Day is tomorrow and a long weekend stretches ahead for most of you. There is plenty to see/do/hear/taste/enjoy in Los Angeles over the next five days.

We will do our best to highlight some of the best the county has to offer in the form of food, music and fireworks honoring the independence of the United States, starting with…

KABOOM!: Motocross. Monster trucks. Fireworks. We love a good party at Fairplex so naturally we will be lighting up the grandstand with entertainment for the holiday. Extreme sports fans will enjoy the stunts of professional motocross and monster truck drivers as they leap through the air and swirl in the dirt. A buffet of fresh fruit and salad, pasta, vegetables and assorted desserts is open for those with terrace seat tickets. For more information check out www.fairplex.com/kaboom/

Americafest: Rose Bowl Stadium is hosting its own Independence Day extravaganza with Americafest from 2:00 – 9:00 p.m. Take the kids over to Pasadena for crafts, food, entertainment, games and fireworks. Presented by Honda.

Hollywood Bowl: Josh Groban will be performing at the Hollywood Bowl for the next two nights in celebration of the 4th of July. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra will also perform patriotic tunes followed by a spectacular fireworks show on both nights.

(Don’t forget to enjoy a BBQ and some sun time with the family and friends before the nighttime festivities! It is an all-day celebration after all!)

After the 4th of July celebrations are over and done with, there’s still an entire weekend to enjoy!

Abbott Kinney First Fridays: Embrace the foodie/bohemian/Westside part of you and head down to Abbott Kinney in Venice for their First Friday happenings. Shop, dine and enjoy local entertainment for a mellow but fun post-4th of July night.

AnimeExpo 2013: The annual AnimeExpo convention is the second-longest running of its kind. Held at the Los Angeles Convention & Exhibition Center, the four-day event is full of cosplay, special previews of games, movies and TV shows and plenty of fun competitions. The convention goes literally all night long with 24-hour gaming, karaoke and other festivities that celebrate the culture of anime and its loyal fans.

Griffith Park Shakespeare Festival: Take advantage of warm summer evenings and check out the free Griffith Park Shakespeare Festival. Festival goers can watch a play (MacBeth this weekend) from the comfort of a blanket, lawn chairs and a picnic. The festival goes on all weekend. Further details are available on the website.

Ballet Under the Stars: Going down an even more diverse route, the Los Angeles Ballet and the Music Center will display their artistic talents with Ballet Under the Stars!, a free performance at Grand Park. Two ballets will be performed, honoring the centennial celebration of composer Igor Stravinsky. Picnics and blankets are recommended for this outdoor affair. Sat., July 6, 7:30 p.m.

City Race: Weekend proving too quiet for your taste? CityRace puts an end to laziness with a unique challenge for you. CityRace takes place this Sunday in West Hollywood, where teams of 2-4 players investigate a series of clues, which leads to discovering many fun facts about the city, all while under a 3-hour time limit. Using your brain and your feet is a great way to close out the weekend and prepare you for another regular work week. Sun., July 7, 11 a.m., $40.
