L.A. Weekender: MLK Weekend

It’s the Pits! Party (Jan 15): The La Brea Tar Pits turns into party central tonight at the “It’s the Pits!” party. Groups and individual artists take over the museum grounds for film screenings, dance and music performances and the Ice Age Encounters exhibit, educating guests about the extinct animals that once roamed Los Angeles more than 10,000 years ago. Asian American Expo (Jan 16-17): The 35th annual Asian American Expo kicks off our 2016 event season and we couldn’t be more excited! This year’s Lunar New Year celebration will be bigger than ever, with thousands of food and shopping vendors, live entertainment in and around our expo halls, eating contests, Anime Impulse, craft beer and a fashion show. Star Party at Griffith Observatory (Jan 16): The Griffith Observatory is hosting their monthly Star Party this Saturday. Take advantage of the public telescope viewing and see the stars up close and personal. Telescope demonstrators will be available to show you where and how to stargaze. Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show (Jan 17): As always, we will be hosting the Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car show bright and early Sunday morning! Shop thousands of parts, check out dozens of classic cars and network with your fellow auto enthusiasts. More info available at pomonaswapmeet.com.

L.A. Weekender: Holidays in Los Angeles

Our campus is fairly quiet this weekend but there is plenty going on around LA and the OC! If you need a little help getting into the holiday spirit we recommend checking out one of these local events this weekend!

L.A. Zoo Lights: The L.A. Zoo transforms into a nighttime winter spectacular in December and word on the street is that it’s worth checking out. Glowing light animals, a beautiful water show and Santa and his reindeer take over the grounds for a festive holiday experience. This is an outdoor event so make sure you bundle up since it’s actually COLD in California for once! Purchase tickets and get additional information at lazoolights.org.

CHILL at Queen Mary: CHILL is back at the Queen Mary for another season of ice, ice and more ice. Walk through The Ice Kingdom, a giant igloo featuring larger-than-life intricate ice creations, ice tube down snowy hills, go ice skating, play paintball, take photos, enjoy live music and immerse yourself in all things December. WinterFest: New this year, Winterfest is yet another holiday festival taking place at the OC Fairgrounds. This one is perfect for families. Feed reindeer, say hello to Santa, go ice skating, ice tubing, and more. There are also carnival rides, cookie decorating, caroling and many other activities great for little ones and adults alike. Cirque Du Soleil’s Kurios (TONIGHT!): Forget Vegas, Cirque du Soleil’s “Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities” opens this weekend in Los Angeles! Journey into the past with jazz, swing and steampunk-electornic performances. As with all Cirque shows, jaw-dropping acts carry the show from start to finish. See it tonight at Dodger Stadium. Holiday Half Marathon (Dec 12-13): Tis’ the season for generosity, love and… running? The annual Holiday Half Marathon is this weekend at Fairplex! The fun starts early Saturday morning at the Kool n’ Fit Festival. Runners can pick up their running packets and bibs and check out health and fitness booths. We will also be hosting the Penguin Waddle Kid’s Run and the Holiday 5K on grounds! The actual Holiday Half Marathon begins bright and early Sunday morning with the first wave at 8 a.m. The Kool n’ Fit Festival continues from 6 a.m. – noon. Rail Giants Train Museum (Dec 12-13): The Rail Giants Train Museum is open to the public this weekend. Explore the ins and outs of these gigantic trains and chat with our docents to learn more about each engine’s unique history. Admission is FREE for all ages. For more information, click here.

Pomona Christmas Parade (Dec 12): The annual City of Pomona Christmas Parade is this Saturday. Onlookers will spot LA County Fair floats in the procession. Head to downtown Pomona to check out the sights from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. For more details, click here.

Fairplex Garden Railroad (Dec 13): Check out the Fairplex Garden Railroad this Sunday! The miniature world is decked out in holiday cheer, including not-so-tiny Christmas trees and garlands strung along the gates. Our docents will be present to answer any questions you might have. Hoppy Holidays (Dec 13): For the craft beer set, Angel City Brewery is hosting Hoppy Holidays. Sip on a chilled brew, eat at Papas Tapas and check out clothing from 35 local artisans from the Arts District. In the holiday spirit, bring a winter coat to donate to the Skid Row Housing Trust. Mother’s Day Weekend in Los Angeles

Mother’s Day is this Sunday which means lots of flowers, cards and affection for moms in Los Angeles! Here are our suggestions for Angelenos looking to celebrate their mothers and mother-figures. Check out the L.A. Weeknder below for some fun ideas this Mother’s Day Weekend:

Pomona Art Walk:  Browse for a unique Mother’s Day gift and support the growing Pomona art community at the Pomona Art Walk. Hundreds of local artists display their works along the streets and in more than two dozen galleries in the city. Elements include paintings, photography, ceramics and jewelry. Many shops, studios and restaurants are open late as part of the festivities. Visit the Art Walk on Saturday from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

NBA / NHL Playoffs: If your mom happens to be an NBA or NHL fan, this is your weekend. The Clippers face off against the OKC Thunder tonight in Game 3 of the playoffs at the Staples Center. Saturday the Los Angeles Kings play against the Anaheim Ducks in Game 4 at the Honda Center in Anaheim. If you’re lucky, you have tickets to either of these games, but when it comes to the playoffs, sports bars are the next best thing. Of course we recommend Finish Line Sports Grill and taking advantage of our mega-TVs, relaxed atmosphere, daily specials and happy hour prices.

Science Discovery Day: The Alf Museum of Paleontology is hosting a special science discovery day this Saturday. Mother’s Day Brunch: McKinley’s Grille offers a delicious brunch menu, made just for Mother’s Day. The weather has been playing games all week, from hot and sunny to overcast and cold and we are ready for a solid stretch of sunshine. Still, it is Los Angeles and that means the weather change is hardly a reason to cancel plans outdoors or otherwise! There is a lot going on in the city this weekend so read to see what we have listed for your L.A. Weekender:

The Chainsmokers: “But first, let me take a selfie.” The duo who brought the “Selfie” song to the airwaves are giving a free performance at Universal City Walk today at 3:30 p.m. as part of the EXTRA television segment hosted by Mario Lopez and Maria Menounos. Topanga Earth Day: In honor of Earth Day next week, Topanga Earth Day is a weekend-long event that features music, speakers, ecological artists, innovative environmental demonstrations, non-profit organizations, sustainable solutions, organic food & beverages and native planting. Kids can partake in activities like the Prayer for Peace flag painting workshop, musical instruments, tree planting, storytelling, face painting, loom and hand spinning and an Alice Wonderland tea party. NBA Playoffs: The Lakers might not have made it to the playoffs this year *moment of silence* but the Clippers are kicking off the series against the Golden Warriors tomorrow night at the Staples Center. Watch the game at your favorite sports bar or try to score tickets, starting as low as $60.

Easter Sunday at Fairplex: PFB/Purpose Church will be holding their outdoor Easter services at Fairplex in the Grandstand this Sunday at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Each service features worship bands and 150-vocal choir and orchestra. Free parking and admission is available at Gate 17 on Fairplex Drive.

McKinley’s Grille is offering a special Easter brunch menu that includes a kids buffet, Caradamom french toast with sweet ginger butter, apple wood-smoked bacon, pastries, omelets, maple-glazed honey ham, black garlic-rubbed Colorado leg of lamb, seared Atlantic salmon, an assortment of salads, pastas and spring vegetables and a number of Easter treats. L.A. Weekender: Taste of Claremont, Toyota Grand Prix and the Festival of Books

If you couldn’t make it to Coachella with your fellow Angelenos don’t worry. There are plenty of other fun things to do in LA. It might not include an amazing musical lineup, or a desert wasteland of dance and celebration, but we have a few ideas up our sleeve for those of you stranded in the city. 40th Annual Toyota Grand Prix: The 40th Annual Toyota Grand Prix is kicking off today and runs through Sunday, April 13th.
