Fairplex Snapshot: Sweet Cases For Foster Children

This month we partnered with Together We Rise to make Sweet Cases for children in foster care. Each department at Fairplex put together a duffel bag with a hygiene kit, blanket and toys/activities for children uprooted from their homes and placed in the foster care system.

Many foster children move from home to home with their few personal belongings tossed into a trash bag. Together We Rise works to bring these children Sweet Case duffel bags so that doesn’t have to be the case.

Our departments were given duffel bags to decorate and fill with necessities and toys, which Together We Rise will distribute as needed.

To learn more about Together We Rise, click here.

Thank you to all our employees who donated their time, money and talents to this project!  We look forward to group efforts like these in the near future.

National Agriculture Day at The Farm!

Newly hatched chicks, Farm-fresh foods and live demonstrations of everything from corn grinding to rope making greeted students this morning at The Farm at Fairplex, all for National Ag Day!

We started things off with a ribbon cutting ceremony, celebrating the beginning of spring planting on The Farm.

Then came the fun part — our field trips. Students took turns at a variety of stations set up around The Farm, learning how to cook and eat the healthy way with Chef Travis from Pappas Artisanal, using vegetables from The Farm.

In another corner the Youth Science Center gave quick hands-on classes on soil and pH balance in plants.

Of course it wouldn’t be a true National Ag Day without a few animals! We introduced rabbits and chicks, who will now call The Farm their home. We also had eggs almost ready to hatch (folks might even get to witness this live at our Grow Pomona event this Saturday!)

In addition to all of these we also had some great exhibits from the FFA, County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, Los Angeles County Commissioner Weights & measures, Community Garden Council, Project Learning Tree and other awesome agricultural organizations represented.

Last but not least we served up some ice cream from Dr. Bob’s and called it a day. We can’t wait for the community to participate this Saturday at Grow Pomona! This event is free to the public and we would love it if you joined us! Click here for more info.

Happy National Agriculture Day from all of us at Fairplex!
