We take lemon pie eating contests seriously around here!

Upland Lemon Festival 2014: Downtown Upland came alive this weekend for the 18th annual Upland Lemon Festival.

Despite the downpour on Friday, Upland residents of all ages came out to support local businesses, watch pie eating contests andLemon Idol, and enjoyed shopping, carnival rides, games and food.

In addition to the usual festival fanfare, Upland also hosted a butterfly habitat and a historic crate label exhibit, documenting citrus packaging labels from decades past.

Overall, we would say it was a big success!

#Dinnercam Promo Video

Tech: If you’re a food blogger and/or work in social media for restaurants, the new #Dinnercam is a slice of heaven. #Dinnercam is a portable photo studio designed specifically for social media food shots. With the perfect white background and lighting options to rival the filters on Instagram, the miniature studio is perfect for bloggers and Insta-addicts to land their ideal photo. #Dinnercam is currently located in a restaurant in Capetown, South Africa but we wouldn’t be surprised if these portable studios begin popping up everywhere, with hashtags like #nofilter and #foodporn running rampant on Instagram and Twitter.

Social Media: Pinterest has installed a Guided Search feature which allows users to search through pins hand-picked by travelers, food experts and popular pinners, so if you are looking for a dinner recipe worthy of Martha Stewart’s praise, Guided Search will help you find it that much faster.

Our bi-weekly Event Industry News post includes event trends, social media and technology industry updates and events news from Los Angeles County.

Junior Fair Board Class of 2014!

The seniors in our Junior Fair Board Leadership program are only a month away from graduation and we couldn’t be more proud! Our seniors entered the program as sophomores and have spent two years giving invaluable hours of their time to helping the local community.

jfb blog post Junior Fair Board Class of 2014! Junior Fair Board Seniors, Class of 2012 & 2013

Junior Fair Board students walk away with a wealth of business understanding, leadership skills, networking ability and above all, community involvement. We are proud to help these bright students throughout high school and know they will go far in the future.

We asked students about their experience on the Junior Fair Board and how they will use the skills they learned. Here are some of their answers:

  • “The Junior Fair Board taught me the importance of helping the community. I will continue my involvement in community service and bring the communication skills I have aquired to all aspects of college.” -Haley Colpen, San Dimas High School senior
  • “I plan on using the skills I learned from JFB to meet new people and stay motivated in college. JFB also taught me how to properly manage my time and be successful in every aspect of my life.” – Kourtney Hayhurst, Don Lugo High School senior

Congratulations to all of our seniors who will be furthering their educations in the fall at colleges throughout the U.S. including UC Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania and UC San Diego.

Event Industry News: Coachella, Twitter changes and the Amazon smartphone

coachella Event Industry News: Coachella, Twitter changes and the Amazon smartphone Coachella thanks their fans for coming to weekend 1 of their festival.

Coachella Weekend 1: A staple of the entertainment industry and a true salute to the Southern California lifestyle, Coachella has long been the envied mecca of music lovers everywhere. The first weekend of Coachella welcomed a wave of A-list performers including Outkast, Lorde, Muse, Beck and Arcade Fire. Pharrell Williams delighted his audience by bringing out an all-start list of guest performers including Gwen Stefani, Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg. Our friends from RCS were there with their carnival rides and we are sure they had a spectacular view of all the performances!

Social media: Twitter plans to completelyrevamp their user profile layout and it doesn’t look half-bad. A large header image, larger profile photo space and customized tweet structuring (tweet pins, anyone?) make the change an ideal one for brands and consumers alike. The profile layout change is just one of many tweaks Twitter has in store for the future.

Tech: We reported rumors of an Amazon smartphone with a 3D display months ago, but now rumor is finally transforming into reality. The Wall Street Journal announced the mega-company’s plans to release a handset device in June 2014. Users will be able to view their screens in 3-D, without the use of glasses. Whether it will overshadow the iPhone and Galaxy users has yet to be seen.

Our bi-weekly Event Industry News post includes event trends, social media and technology industry updates and events news from Los Angeles County.

5 Reasons to Love Lemons

We have been seeing yellow and breathing citrus lately, what with the Upland Lemon Festival* just three weeks away and we don’t mind! There are many benefits to loving lemons (even beyond lemonade and lemon-meringue pie!) and we thought we would share a few with you.

5 Reasons to Love Lemons

lemon detox 5 Reasons to Love Lemons Photo courtesy of from Suat Eman freedigitalphotos.net

1. Grease remover: Have you ever tried to wash a pan after frying bacon, only to have your sponge end up a sudsy, greasy disaster and the pan still smelling like smoke? Next time you cook a greasy meal, cut a lemon in half and scrub your pan with it before washing with soap. The juice breaks up the grease, removes the smell and makes it ready for a proper cleaning.

2. Hair lightener: If you want a few streaks of gold in your hair this summer, try spraying your strands with lemon juice. Just squeeze fresh lemon juice into a cup and add an equal amount of water to it. Put the concoction in a spray bottle, shake well, and douse your hair with it. Then, spend a few hours in the sun and watch as the lemon juice lightens your hair all by itself!

3. Nail strengthener: Mix together olive oil and lemon juice and soak your nails for a spell. The mixture strengthens your nails and gives them a healthy glow. Think of it as a keratin pick-me-up.

4. Detoxer: Lemon water, tea and juice are the best remedies for when you want to give your body a safe and healthy cleanse. Lemons do an excellent job of clearing constipation, heartburn and gas while also helping you feel revitalized. (Bonus: Lemons also help clear your skin!)

5. Anxiety reliever: Lemon oil relieves stress and anxiety and aids in alertness and focus. The next time you are feeling that 2 p.m. slump or feel the need to breathe, consider purchasing a lemon air freshener for your office or lightly inhaling the scent of a fresh lemon. Simultaneous relaxation and focus in the space of a few seconds.

What do you use lemons for? Tell us in the comments section below!

*The Upland Lemon Festival is produced by The Learning Centers at Fairplex. We are honored to once again be a part of a tradition that celebrates the citrus roots of the Inland Empire.
