A Closer Look Into The Mardi Gras Theme

We know everyone loves a good party, so you are all cordially invited to this year’s Mardi Gras celebration at the one and only Flower & Garden Pavilion!
This morning I met with Jim Hynd, our Floral Coordinator, and he not only gave me a tour of the building, but he also taught me a lot about what Mardi Gras actually is.
Here are a few of the things I learned from Jim:

  • Mardi Gras literally means “Fat Tuesday” in French. This is very fitting since the holiday is for celebrating and eating A LOT!
  • New Orleans is known as the birthplace of Jazz. Therefore, Jazz has been embedded in the Mardi Gras theme.
  • Mardi Gras is celebrated on the days leading up to Ash Wednesday – which is the beginning of Lent.
  • New Orleans has the biggest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States.
  • During this party, people host and attend countless number of parades & balls.
  • You always need a King and Queen! Think back to when you were in high school and had to vote for a Homecoming King & Queen.
  • The “official” colors for Mardi Gras are purple, gold and green. However, many people like to add red, yellow and blue.
  • Colorful beaded necklaces are an absolute must! This is why you’ll see hundreds of these at our Flower and Garden Pavilion.
  • Last but not least, let’s talk about FOOD! During this historical celebration, King Cakes are baked and stuffed with small plastic baby figurines. Seems pretty unusual, right? Well, there is a purpose to all of the madness…those who get the slice of cake with the baby are responsible for baking/purchasing the next cake!

After seeing what we have in store for you, we hope you are just as excited as we are! We guarantee that this will be one mind bending experience!

Have you ever been to a Mardi Gras celebration?
What are you most excited to see at this year’s Fair?

Fair Map Is Now Available for Download

When you come to the LA County Fair, how do you find out where you are or where something is located on our Fairgrounds?
If you’re like us, you probably rely a bit on our extremely colorful and ever-so helpful, LACF Map!
Well, guess what? The map that will answer most of your questions is ready to be viewed and downloaded from our LACF website.
Here are a few of the things you will see on this map:

  • Location of ATMs, restrooms, First Aide, Guest Relations, Security/Lost & Found/Police, The Learning Centers Educational Programming, Lost Children, and so much more!
  • Location of Kid’s Zone, Farm, carnival and shopping area!

Although a preview of our Fair map is available below, you can view and download a better quality map here. Trust me, it will help you TONS!

First Round Of Animals Are Here!

You know Fair is a few days away when Sky Shivers, our resident cowboy and Livestock Superintendent, arrives to our grounds with the first round of Fair animals.
In this particular case, these goooats were the first ones to arrive! We have no idea how they beat the pigs, sheep and cows! Now that I think about it, the cows probably just stopped somewhere along the way to take a break and eat some grass. But not to worry, Sky said they will all be here in the next couple of days! We are so excited to welcome our friends to LACF!

The Countdown Begins…9 More Days!

With only 9 days to go until Opening Day, there is no denying it…things are definitely busy here on the grounds.
From crack of dawn to the break of day, there is always someone working on something that will make your experience more memorable – whether it may be painting some signs, installing lighting, bringing in the Farm animals or taking pictures of what is happening on our grounds, our staff is working at a nearly 24/7 pace now.
Speaking of pictures, here are a few taken during my afternoon walk. Hope you enjoy them!

Cheers to our Wine, Beer & Spirits Education Classes!

Fair lovers, get ready because the schedule of our wine, beer & spirits education classes is now up on our LACF website for you to check out and get excited about!
LACF’s Wine, Beer & Spirits Education Program is very popular among Fair guests and worth the effort to get to one since they are really fun and also very informative!
Think of it this way…when you come to one of these classes, you’ll not only meet some of the top names in the wine, beer, spirits and olive oil industries (they lead the classes), but you’ll also get to hang out and meet other Fair guests at our beautiful Wine, Beer, Food & Spirits Marketplace, which happens to be a climate-controlled area! Oh and did we forget to mention the fact that you’ll probably feel a bit tipsy after the class? Don’t fight the inevitable, just go with the flow and relax!
To give you an idea of how diverse our marketplace really is, here are just a few of the classes we will be offering at LACF this year: Wines of the Central Coast with Adam LaZarre; Bonjour – Wines of France, with Chris Braun; Historical Wines of Northern Italy with Andrea Torelli-Lesky; Bubbles From All Over The World with Michael Jordan, Master Sommelier; and American Whiskey & Bourbon, with Ryan Steely.
Each Wine Class features six wines and four cheeses. Additionally, each participant will receive a tasting ticket for a taste of a Gold Medal winner from the International Tasting Bar.
Each Craft Beer Class features 5 beers and each Spirits Class features 4 samples of spirits.
The cost to participate is $20 for each wine class and $15 for each of the beer and spirits classes.
Our wine education classes are held every day of the Fair, so stop with the excuses and check out the website for a complete schedule.

Which classes are you planning on taking this year?

Perception of Beauty and Perfection

A profile series on the artists and individuals of The Art Classic, one of this year’s exhibitions at the LA County Fair – September 4-27, 2015
the art classic“I don’t see the world through the same lens as everybody else” – Jana Cruder
Jana Cruder is a fine-art photographer who is originally from Greensburg, PA – a small rural town outside of Pittsburgh. Since she spent all of her life in the East, coming to the West was very different and eye-opening. When she visited the Southwest on a photo trip, the lighting intrigued her. I guess you could say that she fell in love with our side of the country because after graduating, she moved to Los Angeles, where she has resided for over 10 years now.
Her creative process starts with a general idea of what she is trying to convey, and then she finds a location that will help her convey this idea.  In her series “What Lies Beneath,” Cruder is commenting on “the endless QUESTING young women in our culture do after the perfect ‘KEN.’” She is urging the viewer to think about where we get the idea of beauty from in culture, and how the Barbie doll can influence what we see as beautiful.
In her other photo series, “Great Expectations,” Cruder calls to attention to what happens when Barbie finds her perfect Ken. This series comments on the “great expectations” of young women to have a perfect husband, a home, and kids forming the ideal family unit. In the series the photos show that these great expectations are sometimes too much, and the ideals of a family unit are changing.
Jana selects her models very carefully. “I seek them out. Some are from agencies others are people I’ve met out and about… the look and feel of the models in my imagery is very important to the concept I’m talking about.”
Jana Cruder’s work will be featured in the Millard Sheets Art Center’s upcoming exhibition The Art Classic.
Please join us this year at the LA County Fair to view Jana’s work and the other artists profiled in this series from the Los Angeles Art Association who were selected for this year’s exhibition.
