As Fine As Wine…

September 13, 2008

The Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Marketplace, presented by Ralphs, offers an array of wine (and a few spirits) education classes throughout the Fair for novices and experts alike. Winemakers, wine judges and wine experts of all sorts conduct the classes. On Friday Wes Hagen, winemaker with Clos Pepe Estate held a class on White Wines of Santa Barbara. Take a look:

Wes was great, real casual and relaxed with his “students.” For those who take a class, he said he wants them to walk away feeling demystified about wine. “Wine is simple to enjoy and there is nothing complicated about the evaluation of wine.”
Wes added three things about choosing wine: 1) trust what you like 2) find a brand and support that winery and 3) Have fun. During the class, he told the group that wine is like a craft. He compared it to a fine chair. A good wine should be a comfortable place to sit and watch the world go by.
Here are more of Wes’ suggestions: stick you nose in a glass; if it smells good, drink it. If it tastes good, drink more. He also said to remember QPR – quality to price ratio. “Do consider cost. If a wine blows your mind and it’s only $12, that’s great.”
Wes will be here today to. Check our Web site for a list of other wine education classes.
