Let’s toast the 2010 L.A. County Fair!

What better way to celebrate this year’s Fair than with a glass of wine or champagne?

You’ll find both among winners of the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition, as well as prize-winning spirits and olive oils.

The Fair’s wine education program is extremely popular. Each class features a minimum of six wines and attendees receive a tasting ticket of a Gold Medal winner from the International Tasting Bar at the Wine & Spirits Marketplace that’s presented by Ralphs. Each class costs $17.

Tomorrow, Adam LaZarre, winemaker of Villa San-Juliette, presents “Unusual White Wines – The Gems You Didn’t Know About!” at 2 p.m., “Merlot – It Doesn’t Suck” at 4 p.m. and “Pinot Noir – Sex In A Bottle” at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, you’ll learn “Why Bordeaux is the Most Famous Wine in France…” presented by Paul Wagner at 2 p.m. Wagner talks about  “6 Wines That Will Make You Feel Like James Bond” at 4 p.m. At 7 p.m., the “Passport Party” will be presented by Bob Smalls and Margie Jones.

Cheers Then!

blackboxwineWe’ve had plenty to toast to recently, with the announcement of the winners of the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition, a great media preview tasting of the winners last week in Beverly Hills, and a very successful Wine & Cars Under the Stars gala last Saturday, which was the first opportunity for the public to taste the winners.

Don’t Whine…Wine!

OK, L.A. County Fair fans, just 10 days. It’s almost here. And as you are planning your day at the Fair, for those of you 21 and older, why not add in a wine education class at the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Marketplace? There are also spirits and extra virgin olive oil classes.

Our wine education program is just that – extremely educational and extremely fun. Wine experts (many of whom serve as judges for the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition held in May) from around the globe conduct classes on some very interesting topics like wine and cheese pairing, and wine and chocolate. Other classes include California Cabernets, Wines of Chile, Varietals of Southern Italy, Tequila 101 and Yo Ho Ho – the Lowdown on Rum. The classes are $17 per wine/spirits class, and $8 for extra virgin olive oil classes. Samples are part of the class! You can register for classes online. Check out our Web page.

Even if you don’t take a class, visit the Wine & Spirits Marketplace for wine tasting of our competitions medal winners, beer, cheese and olive oil tasting, too. Grab a bite at the Marketplace Cafe or do some shopping at the Crushed Grape.

Viva Vino!

A global panel of judges just finished selecting the best wines from around the world at the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition, held here at Fairplex. The event has been part of the Fair for 69 years, presenting gold, silver and bronze awards to the best the wine world has to offer. And while the event, a private judging, is held in May, the winners will be announced June 14 at the Wine & Cars Under the Stars gala, which is open to the public. The winners will also be showcased at the Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Marketplace during the L.A. County Fair.

The Wine & Spirits Marketplace (presented by Ralphs, who also sponsored the wine competition) is a great opportunity for all of you armchair wine connoisseurs to learn about award-winning wines, olive oil, cheese, ice cream and beer, and sip some of the winning wines and shop in the Crushed Grape. Our wine department, led by our indefatigable cellar master Mary Ellen Cole, always organizes an interesting cadre of wine experts to present classes like wine pairings, “Guess Which Wine?,” wine and chocolate, and cooking with olive oils. We also offer cooking seminars with professional chefs.

But if you can’t wait until September to try some of these fantastic wines, get yourself to Wine & Cars Under the Stars, a fun evening where vintages of the grape variety meet up with vintages of the four-wheeled variety. For information on that, visit winecarsstars.com.
