Fairplex Weekend Recap: NHRA Winternationals 2016

February 16, 2016

The return of drag racing is always an exciting time at Fairplex. Read on for a full recap of what went down at the drags and elsewhere on campus this weekend.

NHRA Winternationals
We could hear engines roaring all the way on the other side of campus! Thousands of race fans flocked to the Auto Club Raceway for the NHRA Winternationals, marking the official start of the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

It was an exciting weekend, full of non-stop racing, not to mention Gary Denham’s incredible, injury-free crash on Saturday.

Despite the heat (because in California it’s perfectly normal to have 90-degree weather in the middle of winter), it was definitely an event worth attending. First place went to Steve Torrence in the Top Fuel category, Ron Capps for Funny Car and Greg Anderson in the Pro Stock division.

Head over to the NHRA site for a full list of results.

Palates & Palettes
On the other side of campus, a much quieter (but equally fun) event took place on Saturday — a sold-out Palates & Palettes Valentine’s Day session!

Our guests learned to paint the classic Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh and enjoyed wine and food from the Netherlands — Van Gogh’s hometown. It’s always amazing to see how just a little instruction can lead to some pretty great amateur art!

We’re in full event mode at Fairplex and we’re not slowing down this weekend. Make sure you stay up to date on all that’s happening on our campus on our Events Calendar!
